I'm here to talk with you about something I've been sitting with for a long time.
What we are witnessing in the world right now,
The chaos,
The confusion,
The emotional volatility,
The way people are lashing out,
Breaking down,
Reaching for things that cannot hold them.
I want to offer you a different lens for seeing what this is,
An ancestral lens,
What the old ones see,
As they look from inside our hearts.
What we are witnessing is what happens when a collective has not been guided through its rites of passage.
Not just one generation,
But many generations,
A long line of people who have not been taken to the fire.
Who have not been witnessed,
Who have not been renamed,
Never given a container for what was moving through them.
It can feel as though our inner and outer worlds are under attack from all directions,
As if society itself has become a toxic mother,
A wounded father,
And a fearful child.
Diminishing our God-given innocence and creative life force.
And I want you to know,
Before we go anywhere else today,
That this is not a sign that something is broken beyond repair.
These entanglements are not merely afflictions.
They are messengers,
Calling us to remember other ways of being.
Beneath the surface of what we perceive as disorder,
Deeper forces are at play.
Let me tell you what was supposed to happen.
In many African traditions and across many indigenous cultures around the world,
There was a moment in every young person's life when the community gathered around them and said,
You are at a crossroad and we are here to see it happen.
Puberty was not an inconvenience.
It was not something to manage in private,
Embarrassed,
Confused,
Trying to outgrow it as fast as possible.
It was the beginning of initiation.
Young people were taught how to raise and care for animals,
How to cultivate food that nourishes the body and the hormones,
How to live in rhythm with the cycles of nature,
How to nurture themselves and their community from within.
These were not just survival skills.
They were emotional and spiritual regulation embodied in culture.
The rite of passage taught the young person how to hunt,
Thus,
How to feel.
How to ride the wave of instinct and emotion until it returned to calm.
How to be witness in the fullness of what was moving through them without being shamed into silence or abandoned in the overwhelmed.
There was a container.
There was an elder,
There was fire.
And when the right was complete,
The person who came out on the other side was different.
Because something was finally allowed to grow.
Many of us have not received this.
We are barely taught how to feel our feelings,
Then recognize our primal instincts as intelligent.
Instead,
We learn to suppress,
Dismiss,
Avoid.
And so we carried a story of being misunderstood because we were.
Because no one had been taught how to receive us.
So when life's deeper hormonal,
Emotional,
And spiritual waves arrived,
They had nowhere to go.
All that energy got stuck in a pipe called grief,
And now the pipe is clogged.
You know what that looks like.
Unprocessed grief becomes anger and rage,
Or depression and fear,
Or the constant search for something outside yourself to finally make you feel whole.
You recognize the patterns.
You have probably been looking at them for a long time,
Wondering why they keep showing up.
Wondering what is wrong with you.
Nothing is wrong with you.
You are a person who has never been taken to the fire.
And so the fire is still in you looking for a way out.
The spiritual openings that come,
The sensitivity that feels like too much,
The dreams that are trying to tell you something,
The body sensations you do not yet have language for.
They are not symptoms of something gone wrong.
They are the initiation that was supposed to happen,
Knocking on the door from the inside.
The problem is not the opening.
The issue is the absence of a container to meet and welcome the opening.
No elder to sit with you.
No fire to bring your questions to.
No community that knows what this crossroad looks like because they remembered they cross their own.
And so we roam,
Trying to build the container from books,
From therapies,
From spiritual communities that hold a piece of the truth.
Yet,
We,
You,
Are not lost.
We have become culturally homeless,
And that is a real condition with a real remedy.
This moment is like an inverted tree,
Its roots exposed,
Its balance disturbed.
In many ancestral cosmologies,
The tree is the self,
Roots reaching into the earth,
Into ancestors,
Into the memory that holds all things.
Branches reaching towards the sky,
Towards the creator,
The source.
When the tree is upright,
The sap moves,
The medicine circulates,
Life flows.
When the tree is inverted,
As it is now,
The roots are waving in the air.
They cannot drink.
They cannot receive.
And so the whole system runs dry.
The remedy for an inverted world is remembering your inner authority,
Not authority in the way that the world has used that word against you.
Inner authority,
The ability to make choices from your own clarity instead of from fear,
Pressure,
Or inherited wounds.
Your ancestors knew this.
They built it into the architecture of how children were raised,
Into song.
Into ceremony,
Into body.
Our Creator built it into the land itself.
It was not philosophy.
It was living technology.
Rites of passages were not a cultural tradition for one people.
They were the technology of how a human being grows a soul.
And the technology still works.
I want to give you three things the village used to give,
Three things the teenager inside of you was supposed to receive,
And that you can begin to offer yourself right now as a way to return.
In puberty rites across many African traditions,
You were brought into relationship with the living world,
Not as a student learning facts about nature,
As a member of its family,
Taught how to grow food,
How to raise animals,
How to cultivate what nourishes.
Plants are not just remedies you reach for when something goes wrong.
They are 120 million years older than we are.
They have been here long before the fracture.
They remember what we forgot.
And they are still willing to teach us.
The way back into relationship with a plant is not through knowledge itself,
It is through the heart.
Your heart is the great diviner.
When you rest your awareness in the realm of a plant,
You are not studying it,
You are listening to it.
Every plant has a signature,
A particular vibration,
A feeling it gives you when you take it or sit with it or simply place your hands near it.
That feeling is the beginning of a conversation.
A true plant ally is not just the plant that lifts your mood or settles your stomach.
A true plant ally is a living member of your spirit family,
Someone you are in direct communication with,
Whose medicine you know on all levels,
Who lives with you and in you and through you over time.
Plants become mediators.
They are physical extensions of something far older and wiser than the visible world.
As you allow them in,
They begin to rewire your inner world.
Your life changes in ways you could not have planned or predicted.
They remind you of your innate goodness,
Of the innocence that was never actually lost.
So here is your first gift,
A simple one.
Choose a plant to enter into relationship with.
Rosemary,
Lavender,
Mint,
Something that grows grows in your climate and asks something of you.
Grow it if you can.
Drink it.
Bathe in it.
For a number of consecutive days that you choose.
And when you do,
Bring your awareness to the heart and ask,
What is the God force within this plant showing me?
What do I feel in my body when I am in its presence?
Then listen with the part of you that already knows how to receive.
Nature,
The plant,
Will answer in a feeling,
In a dream,
In a realization that arrives quietly while you're doing something ordinary.
That is the umbilical cord to Ma,
To the earth,
Being restored through your willingness to receive her.
The second gift,
An animal to listen to.
The initiate was also brought into relationship with an animal,
Not symbolically,
Literally.
She was asked to feed,
Care,
Observe,
To track,
To learn its nature,
Because an animal does not lie.
It cannot perform.
It cannot suppress.
It lives entirely in its instinct.
It's season.
It's knowing.
And the young person watching it was learning something about herself.
Choose an animal to track this season.
It can be as close as a bird outside your window,
A cat in your neighborhood,
An insect that keeps appearing.
Watch what it does when it is afraid.
Watch what it does when it is fed.
Watch what it does when it knows it belongs.
Then ask,
Which of these am I doing right now?
That question is ancient.
It was the beginning of self-knowledge in many traditions.
Simple observation.
You learned yourself by learning the animal first.
And the third gift or thing the village gave was a way of moving what was stuck.
Not just over talking about it,
But moving through it,
Through breath,
Through song,
Through the body,
Through presence with an elder who could hold what the young person could not yet hold alone.
Here's a simple map you can follow with the elders inside of your own heart as witness.
When something is rising in you and you don't know what to do with it,
Come to the ground in a prayerful position.
First,
Notice where it lives in the body.
Chest,
Throat,
Belly,
Jaw.
Locate it.
Second,
Breathe into that place three times,
Just to tell it,
I know you are there.
Third,
Let it have a sound.
Give this sensation a sound.
Whatever comes,
Even if it is just a long exhale,
Even if it is a quiet hum,
That is the beginning of the river.
That is how the grief starts to move.
You do not have to process it all in one sitting.
You just have to stop pretending it is not there.
The village knew that.
And now,
So do you.
Let us do it now.
I want to invite you into a moment of honest contact.
Bring the grief of the missing rite of passage.
Where in your life an elder was not there?
A moment your song was interrupted and no one noticed.
Come to the ground in whatever way your body asks,
Sitting close to the earth,
Lying flat,
Hands open.
Turn inward towards the great-grandfather and the great-grandmother inside of your heart.
Acknowledge the force of God within you listening.
Ask that what is carried in this space be held by something greater than you.
And now,
Let the grief have a sound.
Stay with the sound for as long as it needs to.
Let it carry whatever is real in this present moment.
Whatever moved in you just now.
That is the river finding its way.
You do not need to understand it yet.
You just need to let it move.
That is what the village knew.
Feelings are not meant to be managed.
They are meant to move.
And the body already knows how.
It's just been waiting for your permission.
Because on the other side of that grief is a choice.
The choice that every initiate eventually faces.
Am I willing to become the one who turns back?
Not back in the direction of the wound,
Back towards the lineage,
Back towards the knowing that the ancestors carried before the fracture.
You can be the lineage carrier who decides that it ends here.
We are not always the strongest.
But we are often the one who can hear the song.
There is a greater song that has been singing you home.
You have felt it,
And that is why you're here.
You do not have to figure all of this out today.
You just have to be willing to take one step towards the fire.
Thank you for listening.
