My Love,
The Sun by Logan Zalinak If I'm being honest,
I'd tell you that when I was little,
I loved to smile.
I'd smile so wide and so often my cheeks were sore.
And I didn't care.
I couldn't stop smiling.
Little smiles,
Soft smiles,
Big hearty beautiful smiles.
All of it felt like the sun touching the earth and kissing my lips.
If I'm being honest,
I tell you my first love was the sun.
Sometimes I still want it to be.
My whole life had been a love affair with the sun.
Until one day,
The moon kissed me.
I'd lie to the sun and tell her I was tired and had to say goodbye.
I'd dodge her,
Hiding beneath the shade of trees.
I'd force my eyes awake as I'd wait for the moon to come and meet me.
I was captivated by the moon's eyes and curious riddles.
The moon and I would play games in the valley at night.
She told me stories,
But not with words.
She'd grab me by the hands so I could feel them with her.
Every night the moon and I would kiss,
And before dawn she'd leave a teardrop in my palm as a promise.
She told me to keep them in a glass jar and hide them from the sun.
For years I kept them in a cave by the forest.
And one day I asked the moon,
What are these for?
The moon let go of my hands and covered herself with a cloud.
She cried so many tears the cloud became heavy and scattered them all over the earth.
The moon cried harder,
And I felt helpless to love her.
No words or hugs could console her.
She was cold to the touch.
It was midnight,
And she was high in the sky,
But she wouldn't look at me.
I waited for her until dawn,
And then I walked to the cave to find the jar of tears.
I picked up the glass jar and hugged the moon's tears.
I held them close to my chest and ran to the top of the mountain.
Sun,
Where are you?
I need you.
The wind carried the clouds away,
And the sun extended her rays to greet me.
My love,
I've missed you.
What happened to your smile?
I took my fingers to my face and realized my cheeks hadn't been sore in years.
My lips were flat.
I had been ignoring the sun because I was in pain and I thought she wouldn't love me anymore.
Tears fled down my cheeks and I extended my arms to show the sun why I was there.
I told her about my friend the moon and the jar of tears she called promises.
The sun listened,
And she smiled at me knowingly.
She kissed my forehead and took my chin in her hands and I looked her in the eyes for the first time since I was a child.
My love,
Meet me half an hour before dusk.
Come to the ocean and bring the jar.
We will help the moon together.
I sat alone on the mountain until the sun began sinking over the water.
In one hand,
I held the jar.
In the other,
I held my own tears resting on my palm.
I closed my fists and began running to the ocean.
Sun,
I'm coming.
Don't leave me.
Breathing heavy,
I halted to a stop with my feet in the sand and ankles in the water.
I knew what I had to do.
The moon was peeking her way over the earth.
I looked at her and smiled softly.
And then I looked at the sun.
I reached my hands towards the sun as far as it would stretch.
I showed the sun my tears,
And I told her I didn't want to keep them secret anymore.
The sun looked at me and I nodded with permission.
She shone her rays upon me and the tears in my hand evaporated and became one with the air.
I felt everything and I cried and laughed and smiled all at once.
I set the moon's jar down in the sand and I ran back into the waves to dance.
The moon rose a little higher as she watched me,
And the sun sunk patiently waiting.
I thank the sun and then turn back to the moon.
Moon,
Do you see me?
We don't have to hide our tears and promise secrets.
We can release them together in the air and the sun will carry them with us.
You don't have to be alone forever.
A wind gushed its way over the water,
And the moon began to peek over the last cloud in the sky.
I waited for an answer,
And before the sun set,
The moon came down and looked at me.
I am ready.
Together,
I helped the moon open her jar,
And we rose it towards the sun.
One by one,
The moon's tears elevated into the pink sky and melted into the air.
Resting at the edge of the water now,
The sun beamed with love,
And I heard the moon sing for the first time.
It was a song of relief and sadness and joy and gratitude.
From then on,
I visited both the sun and the moon every day.
We'd share our woes and worries and love and laughter.
And the moon and I knew we never had to hide alone again.
Instead,
We dance with the sun each day before dusk and greet our loves with palms wide open.
