I'm Lisa Wagner,
Author of Positive Pagan,
Staying Upbeat in an Offbeat World.
Welcome to my little corner of Inside Timer.
Let's jump right in with,
What exactly is a positive pagan?
Or as my friend once asked me while laughing,
Aren't all pagans positive?
Well,
The answer to that is no.
As humans,
No matter what our spirituality,
We have our down days and challenges.
And as a matter of fact,
That's what it is.
No one is immune to hard times.
So to start with the word pagan,
The definition of a pagan,
As a noun,
Is a person who holds beliefs outside of the world's main religions.
I personally hold the view that you can be both a member of one of the major religions,
Whether it be Christianity,
Judaism,
Islam,
Or otherwise,
And yet you still resonate with paganism.
Why is that?
Well,
It's like aligning yourself with glorious mother nature,
Being out in a forest,
Sitting still beside a stream,
Or even feeding the birds or watering your plants.
I'm not one for division,
So let those lines blur a little bit as we venture into paganism and positivity.
Positivity has sometimes a negative connotation.
People who are positive are sometimes thought to be naive or unworldly.
Don't you see the news?
Don't you see the horrible state of the world?
I've heard it in my lifetime several times.
You can be aware and indeed fully versed in all the news of the world,
And yet you still can be positive.
Why is that,
You may wonder?
Well,
Here is the secret of positivity.
It's an energy force.
If you tap into it,
Life flows,
Things get done,
And you move through the world a bit more easily.
Doesn't that sound appealing?
To be positive is not to be oblivious.
Indeed,
You're never more fully alive than when everything is really flowing in your life,
And you feel centered,
Grounded,
And connected,
And even well-versed in all the news of the day.
So if you still need convincing,
Then picture this.
You're having a lousy day.
It's hard to get anything done,
Even on a weekend.
You want to stay in,
Watch movies,
And tune out the world.
Oh yes,
We all have those days.
And if you need to rest and take a break from everything,
Then by all means,
Do so.
But how do you feel afterwards?
You probably feel overwhelmed at all you didn't get done,
And then that starts the anxiety and the negative self-talk spiral.
I know,
I've been there several times myself.
So that's one scenario.
Here's the other.
So you wake up on your day off,
And you ease into the day.
You drink your favorite beverage,
You meditate,
And you do some deep breathing.
You get out of bed,
You stretch a little,
And then you go to your altar.
And your altar can just be as simple as a candle and a piece of art.
Maybe even a stone you picked up on your last nature walk.
So you light the candle,
And you gaze into the flame.
You pull a card from your favorite deck to guide you for the day,
Or you read a bit from a book that inspires you.
Another deep breath.
Ah,
Ah.
You then start your day feeling ready to tackle whatever's next.
All that took less than 10 minutes.
So do you have 10 minutes in your day?
Maybe you could wake up just a bit earlier,
Or do this during lunch if your day starts extremely early.
Or even at the end of the workday,
If you have time before dinner,
Or even for a bit of respite after dinner.
No matter when you do this,
At the end of your day,
Whenever that is,
As you get ready for bed,
No matter what happens,
You'll feel good.
You will feel the inner core of positivity that you tapped into,
And that guided you throughout the day.
Maybe the word on the card that you selected,
Or the affirmation you chose resonated with you and was your background noise for once.
Whatever came your way,
You took care of it.
You drank your water,
You ate good foods,
You got your tasks accomplished.
You even got a chance to do something that you really love.
It was a bit easier.
That day last weekend that you did absolutely nothing,
That was okay too.
You needed the rest.
The day is over,
And there's a new one tomorrow.
You liked how today went.
You'd like that to happen again.
So tomorrow,
You'll try this little routine again.
That routine is completely up to you.
I gave an example of how I start my day,
And for someone who is definitely not a morning person,
Those little rituals make a huge difference as to how I meet my day.
Like a muscle that you exercise,
It takes a bit of consistency so that if you do it regularly,
You will eventually do it without thinking.
You do it automatically and joyfully,
Or even sleepily because some mornings are like that,
Or whenever you start your day can be like that.
Because you now know that this routine brings a calm certainty to your days.
It grounds you.
It's a foundation.
You can close your eyes in the middle of something stressful,
And you go right back to that moment.
You then take a deep breath,
And you're able to deal with stresses a bit more easily.
So it seems like very mundane actions add up to a positive magical life,
And the magic is completely up to you.
Whether the magic is calmer days,
Or getting your goals accomplished,
You can move through this world a bit more easily.
You tapped into the energy of positivity,
And whatever your spiritual beliefs,
You connected with a spiritual world.
You can add prayers,
Novenas,
You can read spiritual books,
Or anything that feels comfortable to you for your spirituality.
You can even look at a picture of trees if nature is your spirituality.
All of that works because it's what matters most to you.
So give this little routine a try,
And see how it affects your daily life.
Do it for a few days,
And take note of the differences.
Maybe you notice you're a little less hairy,
Or a lot more calm.
Make sure you stay hydrated,
Because that's also very important.
