Have you ever noticed?
There's a hope that many of us carry.
A hope that one day life will finally become easier.
Not perfect,
Just lighter.
That one day you'll stop worrying so much.
You'll stop doubting yourself.
You'll stop being pulled around by every thought.
That difficult conversations won't affect you so deeply.
Rejection won't hurt so much.
Fear won't keep visiting in the middle of the night.
Perhaps we wouldn't call it enlightenment.
Most of us would simply call it freedom.
A freedom from suffering,
A freedom from the constant noise of the mind.
A freedom where somehow life no longer feels so heavy.
And yet,
Have you noticed,
Every time you think you've finally arrived,
Life quietly introduces another chapter,
Another uncertainty,
Another beginning,
Another ending.
It's almost as though life isn't trying to become free from change.
It's inviting us to discover something else entirely.
So today I'd like to explore that through a simple image Imagine you've just walked into an escape room.
If you've never been to one before,
An escape room is exactly what it sounds like.
You enter a room filled with puzzles,
Locked boxes,
Hidden clues,
Secret doors,
Objects that seem completely ordinary,
Until suddenly they become important.
The goal is simple,
Find your way out,
But have you noticed something about almost every escape room?
They are dimly lit.
Not because the designers want to make your life difficult,
But because mystery needs shadows.
If every light switched on the moment you walked in,
Every clue would already be visible.
Every puzzle would already be solved.
There would be no curiosity.
No discovery,
No excitement.
The game would be over before it had even begun.
The darkness isn't a mistake.
It's part of the design.
Perhaps life is a little like that.
Imagine you're standing inside that room.
In your hand you have a torch.
Wherever the beam lands,
That becomes your world.
You shine it across the room and it lands on an old portrait.
In the dim light,
The face looks strange,
The shadows distorted.
For a moment,
It almost looks frightening.
Your body reacts,
Your mind immediately creates a story.
Something isn't right,
It says.
Then,
Sometime later,
Someone opens the curtains.
Sunlight pours into the room.
You look again.
The portrait hasn't changed.
It was beautiful all along.
Only the light changed.
How often does this happen in our own lives?
Someone doesn't reply to our message.
They must be upset with me.
A relationship changes.
This must be the end.
A mistake at work.
I am not good enough.
One difficult season.
My life is falling apart.
The mind isn't trying to hurt us,
It's simply trying to understand the room,
Using the little light it currently has.
And because that's all we can see,
It feels like the whole truth.
But perhaps,
It's simply being seen in low light.
Think back over your own life.
Can you remember something you were absolutely certain about?
Perhaps you believed you would never recover from a heartbreak.
That losing that job had ruined everything.
That you would never feel happy again.
At the time,
The story felt completely true.
Years later,
You smile gently at the person you were.
What changed?
Sometimes,
Life changed.
But often,
More light arrived.
You saw more of the room.
You realized your story wasn't wrong.
It was simply incomplete.
We've all been fooled by low light before and perhaps remembering that is the beginning of wisdom.
Science paints an extraordinary picture.
Everything appears to be activity.
Particles moving,
Stars forming.
Planets turning,
Chemistry becoming biology,
Biology becoming experience.
Nothing seems designed simply to exist.
Everything participates.
Then something extraordinary happens human beings arrive and unlike anything else we know we don't simply experience life we create meaning meaning is beautiful without meaning there would be no music no poetry no love no purpose but sometimes we forget that meaning is something we create We mistake our interpretation for reality itself.
Long before science,
The ancient sages whispered something remarkably similar.
They suggested that awareness wanted to experience itself through form.
That in order to truly know itself,
It temporarily forgot what it really was.
Not because forgetting was a mistake.
But because forgetting made experience possible.
After all,
You can't play hide and seek if nobody hides.
You can't enjoy an escape room if every answer is already obvious.
Perhaps life was never designed to remove every shadow.
Perhaps the shadows are part of the experience.
So what is enlightenment?
Maybe we have misunderstood it.
Maybe enlightenment isn't flooding every room with permanent light.
Perhaps it isn't becoming someone who never feels sadness,
Who never feels fear.
Who never feels confused.
Perhaps it isn't escaping life at all.
Maybe enlightenment is simply remembering that you're holding a torch,
Not the sun.
That whatever you're seeing today,
However convincing it feels,
May not be the whole room.
Not because your thoughts are wrong.
Not because your feelings are wrong.
Not because more light is always possible.
Awareness doesn't make life disappear.
It simply softens your certainty.
Instead of saying,
I know exactly what's happening,
You begin asking,
What might I not be seeing yet?
That question changes everything.
Let's look at desire for a second.
Perhaps this is where spirituality has also been misunderstood.
Many people believe the goal is to stop wanting,
To stop desiring,
To become detached from everything.
But imagine a life without desire.
No curiosity,
No adventure,
No creativity,
No longing to love,
Longing to build,
Or no longing to discover.
Desire isn't the problem.
Desire writes songs,
Builds homes,
Creates families,
Explores the world.
The suffering begins when desire quietly becomes attachment.
When I would love this becomes I need this to be happy.
Life was never asking us to stop wanting.
It was inviting us to enjoy wanting.
Without becoming imprisoned by the outcome.
To love deeply while knowing everything changes to dream boldly while accepting that life may have another plan.
Perhaps this is what enlightenment really looks like.
Not escaping the escape room.
Not refusing to play.
Not pretending the puzzles don't matter.
But entering life completely.
Loving fully.
Laughing freely.
Creating courageously.
Feeling grief when grief arrives.
Feeling joy when joy appears.
Getting completely immersed.
While quietly remembering that today's puzzle isn't the whole room.
Isn't your whole life.
Today's story isn't a whole story.
How Venice doesn't remove you from the game.
It simply reminds you.
That you're more than the character you're playing.
So perhaps you don't need to spend your life chasing a future where suffering disappears.
Perhaps freedom isn't the absence of challenge.
Perhaps enlightenment isn't permanent daylight.
Perhaps wisdom is simply learning to walk gently through the darker rooms without believing every shadow.
To trust that more light will come.
To become curious instead of certain.
To hold your stories lightly while participating in life completely.
Because life was never asking you to solve every puzzle before you could begin living.
Life was inviting you to live while the puzzles unfolded.
And whenever the room feels dark again.
Feel the torch resting gently in your hand.
Take one slow breath,
And remember,
You've been fooled by low light before,
And that's okay.
More light has always found its way in.
Not all at once,
But just enough for the next step.
Maybe that's all we've ever needed.
Not the whole room,
Just enough light to keep living fully.
So here's a mantra for you to remember today I welcome the mystery.
I hold my stories lightly.
I embrace desire without attachment.
And I remember I'm here not to escape life but to live it fully.
Let me repeat that.
And I remember I'm here not to escape life,
But to live it fully.
As always,
Thank you for sharing this moment with me.
Thank you for the beautiful messages,
Reflections and stories you continue to send.
And it means a great deal to know that these conversations are finding their way into your life in meaningful ways.
So thank you so much.
