There's a version of you that you keep returning to in your imagination.
Not as fantasy,
But as recognition.
A version that feels more true,
More alive,
More genuinely yourself than the one currently navigating your daily reality.
And the question I want to answer today is not how you become them eventually,
It's how do you start being them now?
Before the outer life has caught up,
Before the evidence has arrived,
Before the circumstances have rearranged themselves to match the identity you're building.
Because true transformation doesn't actually live in the waiting.
And lessen the choosing before the proof.
Since I started creating content about personal transformation and identity shift,
There's one thing that a lot of people have resonated with and struggled with.
Something that happens in the gap between who you are and who you're becoming.
Something that's really uncomfortable,
Sometimes painful,
In a very specific way.
Not the discomfort of not knowing who you're becoming.
Because a lot of you actually know that quite clearly.
The vision is vivid.
The sense of the new identity is real and specific and feels truer than the current version of your life.
The discomfort is the gap between the internal knowing and the external reality that hasn't yet moved to magic.
You know who you're becoming.
And you look at your current circumstances,
The relationships,
The habits.
Evidence your daily life is providing and they're still reflecting the old version.
The one you're in the process of leaving behind.
And the question that sits in that gap is,
How do I live as the new version of myself when everything around me still looks like the old one?
That's what we're going to explore today.
And I want to start with a reframe.
A different perspective on this particular challenge.
Your identity is not determined by your current circumstances.
Let me say that again slowly.
Your identity is not determined by the law.
By your current circumstances.
What was the first thought that came up for you when you heard this perspective?
Was it.
.
.
Well,
It's easy for you to say.
Or was it,
Duh,
Of course.
Where was it?
Wait,
It's the opposite,
Isn't it?
Many people,
Myself included,
When I first started studying identity shift,
Assumed the opposite without even realizing it.
We treat our circumstances as evidence of our identity.
We look at what our life currently looks like.
What we have,
What we've built,
How people currently treat us.
What our daily reality reflects.
And we use that as information about who we are.
But that is actually backwards.
Your circumstances are not a reflection of who you are.
They're a reflection of who you have been.
Of the identity you've been operating from up until now.
Of the choices that previous identity made.
The beliefs it held,
The actions it took or didn't take.
Which means.
.
.
And this is the crucial part.
Your current reality is always lagging behind your actual identity.
It's always showing you the past rather than the present.
And if you wait for the circumstances to change before you start operating from the new identity,
You wait for a very long time.
Because the circumstances change in response to the identity.
Not the other way around.
The new identity has to come first.
The circumstances follow.
That is the secret.
And it's the only sequence that actually works.
So what does it mean practically to operate from a new identity before the external evidence has arrived?
And I want to be careful here because there's a version of this teaching that becomes spiritual bypassing.
The kind of magical thinking that says,
Just act as if,
And the universe will deliver.
And while there's genuine truth in that principle.
The way it's usually taught.
Skips over something essential.
It skips over the internal work of actually becoming the new identity.
Not performing it,
Not pretending,
But actually building it from the inside,
At the level of your nervous system,
And your emotional reality,
And your genuine sense of self,
So that when you make the choices as your new identity,
They're coming from a real place,
Rather than a constructed one.
Because there's a fundamental difference between performing a new identity and embodying one.
Performance is external.
It's the behavior without the internal shift.
It's acting as if,
Going through the motions of the new version while internally still operating from the old beliefs,
The old feelings,
The old sense of self.
Embodiment is internal first.
It's generally inhabiting the new identity at the level of thoughts,
Feelings,
And self-perception,
And then allowing that internal reality to naturally express itself in external choices.
Performance is exhausting and ultimately unsustainable.
Embodiment is where genuine transformation lives.
So the work is not to perform the new identity.
Is to actually become it internally first.
And then let that becoming express itself in your choices.
Let me be very specific about what this actually involves,
So that you not only understand the concept,
But also know what the practice is.
The first layer is thought.
The new identity thinks differently from the old one,
Not just about itself,
But about everything.
About what's possible,
About what problems mean,
About what setbacks indicate.
About what the current circumstances are telling the story of.
For example,
The old identity,
Let's add a difficult situation and fix.
This is evidence of who I am.
This is confirmation of the limitation,
The lack,
The story I've been telling about myself.
And the new identity looks at the same situation and thinks.
This is the current chapter,
Not the conclusion,
Not the definition,
The current chapter.
In a story that is still being written by the choices I make from here.
That's shit!
In your thoughts.
From seeing your situation as your identity to seeing them as just a chapter is not positive thinking.
It's not pretending things are better than they are.
It's simply seeing your current reality in a completely different way.
And if you don't like to read and don't resonate with the idea of a chapter,
Think of it as a level in a video game or a season of your life.
It's where you are right now.
But it's not who you are.
And this perspective is available to you right now,
Not after the circumstances change.
Of before.
The second layer is filling.
And this is probably the harder one.
Because we're so used to thinking that our feelings are simply a response to what's happening around us,
Right?
Something good happens and we feel good.
Something difficult happens and we feel bad.
So we assume the feeling comes from the circumstance,
From a specific event.
But that's actually not how emotions work.
Our emotions are prediction loops.
Our brain is constantly taking in what's happening,
Comparing it to what we already know from the past,
And making a prediction about what's happening.
What it means.
And what might happen next.
And that prediction creates the actual emotional experience.
Which means your current circumstances don't have to dictate how you feel.
Your emotional experience is much more flexible than you might think.
And this is where identity shift gets really interesting.
Because the new identity doesn't just think differently,
It begins to feel different.
That have a different emotional relationship with themselves and with their life.
A different level of self-trust.
A different felt sense of their own worth.
Capability Safety.
And belonging.
And no,
That doesn't mean you have to force yourself to feel positive when your circumstances are difficult.
It doesn't mean pretending everything is fine.
It means you can begin giving your brain new experiences.
To learn from.
You can deliberately cultivate the emotional states of the person you're becoming so that over time,
Your brain has something new to draw from when it makes its predictions.
This is one of the reasons practices like meditation,
Visualization,
And somatic work can be so powerful for identity shift.
Not because they're spiritual accessories or because they help you escape reality.
But because they give you opportunities to experience something different internally.
To practice feeling the self-trust,
Worth,
Safety,
Confidence,
Love,
Or abundance of the identity you're becoming even before your external circumstances fully reflect it.
And the more you experience those states,
The more familiar they become.
You're not pretending to be someone different.
You're giving your brain new information about who you are.
And the third layer.
Decision-making.
This is where the internal shift starts to become visible.
Where the new identity begins to show up in the actual choices you make in your actual life.
And this is what we mean by empathy.
The practice here is actually pretty simple.
Before you make a decision,
Big or small.
Ask yourself one question.
What would the new version of me choose here?
Now what does the old version automatically want to do?
Now what does the path of least resistance suggest?
Not what would keep everyone comfortable and everything exactly the way it is.
What would the new me?
The version you keep imagining.
The one who has already become the person you're in the process of becoming.
And then as often as you can.
Choose that.
Not perfectly,
Not every time,
But often enough that you start creating a new pattern.
You start giving yourself new evidence about who you are and what you're capable of.
Now I want to talk about one of the biggest obstacles that can come up when you start doing this.
And that's the feeling of being free.
Inauthentic.
Because when you start making choices from a new identity before your circumstances have caught up,
It can feel fake.
You might think,
But this isn't really me.
Or even Who am I to act like this when my life doesn't look like this yet?
And I think that feeling comes from a very particular idea of what authenticity means.
Most of us have been taught,
Either directly or indirectly,
That being authentic means expressing exactly who we are right now.
Our current patterns,
Our current feelings,
Our current habits,
Our automatic responses.
But if authenticity only means being true to who you've been,
How do you ever become who you're capable of becoming,
Right?
What if being authentic isn't about being true to the version of you that you've become accustomed to?
What if it's about being true to the deepest version of you,
The version that feels more like you than the patterns you've developed along the way?
Because some of those old patterns were built from adaptation.
From protection.
From trying to navigate the life you were living at the time.
They may have helped you get here,
But that doesn't mean they have to determine where you go next.
So when you make a choice from the new identity,
You're not necessarily being inauthentic.
You may actually be practicing a deeper kind of authenticity.
Choosing from what you know is actually possible for you.
And that is very different from pretending.
You're not performing a new identity for other people.
You're practicing becoming it.
And there's one more thing I want to talk about,
Because this is probably the most practically challenging part of the whole process.
What happens when the gap.
.
.
Between your new identity and your current circumstances is really,
Really big.
When the person you're becoming feels so far away from what your life actually looks like right now,
That choosing from that identity feels almost absurd.
This is where a lot of people give up.
Because the gap just feels too big.
But I want to offer you a different way of looking at it.
The gap is not the problem.
The gap is the practice.
Because every time you make a choice from the new identity while your circumstances are still reflecting the old one,
You are practicing.
You're creating new experiences.
You're showing yourself,
I can choose differently.
I can respond differently.
I can be this person,
Even here.
And over time,
Those choices start to accumulate.
The gap is not evidence that the transformation isn't happening.
The gap is where the transformation happens.
Because choosing the new identity when everything around you already confirms it is easy.
But choosing it when your circumstances still look like the old version of your life?
That's the practice.
That's the work.
And that's why the choices you make in the gap may actually be some of the most important choices you make in your transformation.
So let me close with this.
The person you keep imagining is not a fantasy.
They're not a distant aspiration that might become real under the right conditions.
They're the truest version of you.
The part of you that exists underneath all the adapting,
The old stories,
And the patterns you've picked up along the way.
And they become real,
Consistently embodied,
And eventually reflected in your circumstances,
Not by waiting for your circumstances to change first.
They become real through choosing them.
Thinking as them,
Feeling as them,
Making decisions as them,
Before the evidence,
Before the external world has caught up to what's already true.
Internally.
That choosing,
Repeated,
Imperfect,
And deeply courageous is not the path to becoming them.
It is the becoming itself.
They're built in every choice you make from their identity.
And they have been waiting,
Not in the future,
Not in better circumstances,
Not after the transformation is complete.
But in the very next decision you make.
So choose them there.
And then again.
That's how it become real.
Before you go,
Here's one practice you can start doing now.
Identify one decision.
One you're currently facing or one that comes up regularly.
Where the old identity and the new identity will choose differently.
And this week,
When that decision comes,
Choose as the new version.
And notice what it feels like to be them,
Even briefly.
Even imperfectly.
That noticing,
That felt sense of the new identity in action is the evidence your nervous system needs.
So give it that.
Go be yourself.
