Something happened to you. And I do not need to know what it was. At the time, it did not damage you - let us be accurate. At the time, it took you apart. And then time passed, and you got up and rebuilt something, and from the outside you were fine. In a great many measurable ways, you actually are fine. And you have never been the same. That is the sentence almost nobody is allowed to say out loud. You did not come out of that unchanged. You are not going to. There is no version of this where you get the old you back. It still comes up. Years later. Decades, for some of you. Not constantly - that is the confusing part. There are long stretches where it is nowhere at all, where you would tell somebody you were completely over it and mean it. And then there is a Tuesday, and something entirely ordinary happens, and it is right there at full volume as though no time had passed. And you think: I thought I had dealt with this.
