Before we begin,
You will need a mirror.
Not to examine your face,
Not to fix anything.
Today the mirror is where you will practice staying with yourself.
Place it in front of you and you don't have to look yet.
There is something strangely intimate about meeting your own eyes.
We see our reflection every day.
But we rarely remain long enough to encounter the person looking back.
We check the hair and the skin and the clothes.
The parts we've been trained to evaluate,
And then we move on.
But today,
I want you to stay.
When you're ready,
Lift your eyes.
Look directly into your reflection.
Not at your entire face,
Into your eyes.
Notice what happens.
Do you soften?
Become uncomfortable.
Immediately search for a flaw.
Do you want to smile so the moment feels less serious?
Do you want to look away?
There is no wrong response.
Just notice.
Just notice how difficult or unfamiliar it feels to receive your own attention.
And if looking becomes too intense,
Lower your eyes towards your hands or the frame of the mirror.
You can pause or stop at any time.
Stopping doesn't mean that you failed.
It may simply mean your body has told you,
This is enough for today.
And you can honor that answer and return when you're ready.
If you can meet your eyes again.
And silently ask the woman in the mirror.
When did you begin believing you were not enough?
Don't answer from your intellect.
I want you to wait.
Let a memory,
A face,
A sentence,
Or a feeling come forward.
Maybe someone told you directly.
Maybe no one needed to say it.
You learned it from what received praise.
You learned it from what brought punishment.
You learned it from who was chosen.
From who was protected.
From who was believed.
From who was allowed to need.
Keep looking at her ask.
Whose approval did you learn to survive on?
Whose disappointment still makes you question yourself.
Whose voice do you hear when you criticize your body,
Your choices,
Your emotions,
Or your life?
You may feel tears.
You may feel anger.
You may feel nothing.
Don't make up any emotions.
Your honesty matters more than your tears.
But if tears come.
You don't need to wipe them away immediately.
Let the woman in the mirror see that you usually hide from everyone else.
Look at her carefully.
How many years has she spent trying to prove that judgment wrong?
How much has she accomplished while secretly asking?
Is this enough now?
Am I enough now?
Will you choose me now?
Ask her.
Who did you become so that other people would stay?
Did you become strong?
Easygoing.
Useful.
Quiet.
Accomplished.
Hyper-independent.
Understanding even when you were the one being hurt.
Did you become the woman who needed nothing because needing had once been used against you?
Stay with her if you can.
If you need to look away,
Go ahead,
Look away.
Ground yourself,
Place your feet against the floor and notice the room around you.
Remind yourself.
I am here.
I am allowed to pause.
I decide how far I go today.
When you're ready,
Return your eyes to the mirror one final time.
Don't reassure her yet.
Don't rush to tell her she's beautiful.
And don't cover the truth with an affirmation.
Just say.
I see how hard you've been trying.
Again.
I see how hard you've been trying.
And then ask.
What were you afraid would happen if you stopped?
Let that be today's question You do not have to solve it.
You do not have to transform it.
Simply refuse to abandon her when the answer appears.
Before you leave the mirror say I may not know how to stay with you yet,
But I am willing to return.
Tomorrow we will look at what it has cost you to become the woman everyone could depend on.
For today,
This is enough.
Lower your gaze when you're ready Feel your feet.
Notice the room.
Drink water.
Write down one sentence that came up today.
Without any edits.
And if you stopped before the end,
You are still welcome to return.
The mirror will not punish you for needing time.
