This short is taken from a longer session of The Female Stoic podcast where we discuss how we can empower ourselves in a stoic way. In the 18th Century, the Blue Stockings Society was an informal women's social and educational movement in England that emphasised education and mutual cooperation. Elizabeth Carter - a member - was the first person to translate the works of Epictetus in to English. Stoic empowerment is the practice of gaining inner strength, resilience, and tranquility by focusing exclusively on what you can control—your thoughts, reactions, and actions—while accepting what you cannot. It transforms challenges into opportunities for growth by cultivating virtues like courage and wisdom, reducing stress, and fostering a proactive mindset. The Female Stoic podcast, managing emotions, focus, female empowerment.

Transcript

When we look at the work of the Blue Stockings,

We come to see that in the 18th century,

Societal expectation placed upon women was extreme.

And yet they still found a way to adopt Stoic philosophy and managed to realize their ambitions and achieve their goals regardless.

That is the example that is set by them for us.

And this is why in the Female Stoic Podcast,

I connect philosophy with literature,

Because these women,

One of them being the first person to translate the works of Epictetus,

These women found a way through the difficulties.

They had many external forces placed upon them and they found a way to navigate that and still achieve the outcomes by separating their focus from the externals and directing it towards what they were doing internally,

Honoring their own virtue,

Their own higher self.

And that is what Stoicism for Women today can provide,

Can do.
