How much of what you want is actually yours?
We live surrounded by other people's ideas of success,
Happiness,
Beauty,
Achievement,
And even the life we are supposed to want.
But how do we tell the difference between a desire that comes from within us and one we have simply learned to desire?
This excerpt from the Art of Joyous expansion explores what it means to return to your own signal.
Returning to your true signal,
Discovering what is actually yours.
Once the current identity begins to loosen,
Your attention is no longer fully occupied with maintaining what has been,
And a more relevant question can finally come into focus.
What is actually true for me now?
This is an essential shift,
Because identity change is not only about releasing what no longer fits.
But also about recognizing what is genuinely yours to move toward.
For many people this question brings hesitation rather than immediate clarity,
Because much of what we have learned to want has been shaped by external influence.
Your brain is highly social.
It naturally learns what to value,
Pursue and avoid by observing others,
A capacity that once supported survival by helping us move with the group when it mattered most.
That mechanism is still active.
In neuroscience,
This is described as automatic goal contagion.
From an early stage,
We are exposed to models of success,
Approval,
And value.
We observe what is rewarded,
What is admired,
And what is considered meaningful.
Over time,
The external signals begin to blend with our own preferences,
And this creates a mixture of desires.
Your upbringing,
Or the constant exposure to other people's lives.
As a result,
You can pursue something for years,
Achieve it,
And still feel that something is missing.
You were moving toward a goal,
But not necessarily your goal.
So it is key to return to your own signal.
You cannot shift into a new identity with clarity if the direction itself is unclear.
You need to become more aware of what resonates beyond conditioning.
There is a difference between what feels impressive and what feels genuinely meaningful,
What looks valuable and what feels alive when you consider it.
The new story has to be written in your own terms,
Otherwise you will simply recreate a different version of misalignment.
Begin by filtering.
Start noticing what genuinely resonates when external influence is no longer leading the process.
Creating moments of inner quiet is essential,
Because when your attention is no longer absorbed in reacting or maintaining,
It becomes available to perceive something new.
This may happen by sitting quietly,
Walking in nature,
Or writing without trying to reach a conclusion.
The goal is not to force clarity,
But to allow it.
From this more open state you can begin to ask different kinds of questions.
Not what should I want or what is realistic,
But questions such as what feels naturally interesting to me.
What draws my attention without effort?
If I had no history and no labels,
Who would I choose to be now?
What kind of experiences feel expanding when I imagine them,
Even if I do not yet know how they would happen?
What does my life feel like when I'm moving in total alignment with my joy?
These questions are meant to shift your attention toward what is already present but is often overlooked,
And not to produce immediate answers.
Clarity is not limited to specific goals or clearly defined outcomes.
You can still move forward without knowing exactly what you want.
What matters is having a sense of direction.
It often begins as a feeling,
A natural pull towards something lighter,
More aligned,
Or more alive.
You do not need everything figured out,
Simply notice what feels true.
What is true for you is not random,
It is not interchargeable and is not meant to look like someone else's path.
There is an innate uniqueness in how you perceive,
How you think,
What you are drawn to,
And how you express it.
Your uniqueness is not something you need to construct.
It is already present.
It is part of how the ocean is expressing itself through you.
Therefore you are not here to become a generic version of success.
You are here to express a specific configuration of qualities,
Perspectives and sensitivities that only exist in this exact combination through you.
This is why comparison so often leads to contraction.
Because the moment you try to measure your pass against someone else's,
You move away from your own signal and into imitation.
And imitation,
Even when it looks successful,
Does not feel stable from the inside.
