This gentle poem is a balm to ones left behind after a loved one has passed. It invites the listener to think about the loved one as being all around them. With its comforting images of birds and snow, and gracious rhymes, it soothes and gives another way to think of the departed. It evokes the notion that death is not an end, but a transformation like the wind all around us. The poem is frequently read at funerals and has circled the globe due to its popularity. It has brought me comfort since I first read it when I was a child, grieving over the loss of my Grandpa. I still find comfort in it and often send it along in a handwritten note to those who are grieving. Clare Harner is the author, although it is frequently attributed to others.

Transcript

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there.

I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sun on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift,

Uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there.

I did not die.
