You most likely have a very clear idea of how anxiety feels in your body.
How unpleasant.
And perhaps a few ways to avoid it.
But have you ever thought about what anxiety actually is?
Is it a threat that needs to be eliminated?
Is it something to be avoided at all costs?
Today,
I invite you to consider an answer that may sound controversial.
But comes from both science and my personal understanding of anxiety.
Deep inside your brain.
Sits a structure called the amygdala.
It's one job.
Is to keep you safe.
The moment it detects danger,
Real or imagined,
It fires.
Heart rate rises.
Breath shortens.
Muscle tightening.
That is what you feel when anxiety strikes.
This mechanism is millions of years old.
And it is extraordinarily good at its job.
But hear what most people won't tell you.
Anxiety is not just a physical event.
It is also a messenger that carries very important information.
Information that is almost always worth hearing.
This message.
Lives in both your body and mind.
And your past.
And in the present moment.
It takes a little courage to receive it.
But once you do.
