It is usually practised with a somatic or trauma-informed therapist. You slow down enough to sense an impulse as it forms, name its direction and quality, and let the unfinished action sequence complete at a pace you can tolerate. Supporting skills include titration, working in small doses; pendulation, moving between activation and calm; and dual awareness, staying anchored in the present while contacting the impulse.
Impulse Tracking is not the same as Movement Impulse Awareness, which simply observes movement urges; here the tracking is active and therapeutic, following specific incomplete action sequences toward completion. It also differs from Micro-Gesture Awareness, which attends to tiny communicative gestures, whereas Impulse Tracking follows larger, directionally oriented movement tendencies.
