Working With Jealousy

With Sravasti Abbey Monastics

"Beware the green-eyed monster", warned Shakespeare in his play Othello, a classic study of how jealousy ruins our happiness and relationships. Instead of getting overwhelmed by this powerful emotion, join Tenzin Tsepal in this course to learn how to identify jealousy when it arises in your mind, and apply antidotes to subdue it well before it can affect your actions of body and speech and your relationships with those around you. By replacing jealousy with beneficial states of mind, you will develop a genuine sense of confidence that brings inner peace and fulfilment.

Meet your Teacher

Sravasti Abbey is among the first of its kind—an American Buddhist monastic community where nuns and monks and lay students learn, practice, and live the Buddha’s teachings. While monastic training is the focus, lay guests are also welcome to experience community life, offer service, and experience the kindness of others. The Abbey’s network is much wider than our 300-acre property in rural Washington State. Through the web, we are interconnected with friends around the world. After receiving her novice ordination with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2001, Venerable Tenzin Tsepal studied Buddhist philosophy at Chenrezig Institute (QLD, Australia), where she served as the Western Teacher for 10 years. In 2016, she joined Sravasti Abbey Buddhist Monastery in Newport, WA where she currently lives.

It involves animosity and causes mental unhappiness.” Tenzin Tsepal explains what jealousy is and how to identify it when it arises.

Good Enough, Dear

Lesson 7

Be Careful What You Wish For

The writer Oscar Wilde said, “There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, the other is getting it.” When we’re jealous of someone or overwhelmed by desire for an object we can’t attain, we don’t think about the problems that will come with getting what we want. Venerable Tenzin Tsepal gets us to expand our minds and think about the long-term results of getting what we want, which always includes problems in addition to the benefits we might imagine.

Lesson 8

Contemplating Cause & Effect

Venerable Tenzin Tsepal introduces the Buddhist concept of karma and how our present experience is the result of causes we have created in the past. With that in mind, we can learn to accept that others have created the causes to experience certain results. Instead of getting jealous, we can accept our present situation and focus our energy on creating the causes for beneficial future results.

What a wonderful insightful series. My immense gratitude to Sravasti Abbey for this gift which has so gently shown me the path to walk on. May many many people benefit from it and the teacher be blessed with long healthly life. :) 🙏🏾 Just wanted to share this - In Hindi language, jealously is called 'Jalan' (जलन), which literally translates to burning sensation.
