
Om Mani Padme Hum (ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པ་དྨེ་ཧཱུྃ) Mantra Chanting
The mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum” (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པ་དྨེ་ཧཱུྃ) is the best-known prayer in Tibetan Buddhism and is attributed to the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokiteshvara (Tibetan: Chenrezig). In Tibet, it is often pronounced as “Om Mani Peme Hung”. It symbolises the wish for liberation from suffering for all sentient beings. The meaning of the six syllables: Each syllable purifies a specific emotional state and is associated with the six realms of existence: Om (ཨོཾ): Purifies pride (the realm of the gods) Ma (མ་): Purifies jealousy (the realm of the demi-gods) Ni (ཎི་): Purifies passion/desire (human realm) Pad (པ་): Purifies ignorance (animal realm) Me (དྨེ་): Purifies greed (hungry ghost realm) Hum (ཧཱུྃ): Purifies hatred/aggression (the realm of hell).
