Meet your Teacher

Nicole is your guide on the path to vocal freedom. She has always been drawn to singing. Photos from her early childhood show her clutching a turkey baster and singing into a tiny recording device—not to suggest she was “destined” to sing, but to reflect the innate desire that lived within her. Over time, that desire was systematically repressed, and she spent many formative years not singing. Eventually, she became so afraid to be heard that she grew quiet, avoiding and neglecting the part of herself that had once brought so much joy, freedom, and color to her life. With time and great care, Nicole has made a significant journey back to her voice. Today, she confidently shares her music with the world and embraces the power of her voice. Along the way, she’s experienced many unexpected gifts. She has learned to know and express her truth with confidence, foster deeper connection in her relationships, deepen her embodiment practices, communicate with nature, and hear—and act on—her intuition, all because she has come to trust her voice.

Lesson 19

Tone Level IV

Here you are introduced to The Scale – Indian Classical Singing Style. This is a way of organizing our sounds and is helpful for improvisation, songwriting, and harmonizing. You may have heard about Do Re Me Fa So La Ti Do (If you ever watched The Sound of Music!) The Sargam is similar, with syllables to represent different positions in the scale: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa. This is extended to the 12-note scale when we add all the half-steps Sa (Re) Re (Ga) Ga (Ma) Ma Pa (Dha) Dha (Ni) Ni Sa. Indian classical music uses a movable octave, which means you can begin your octave at whatever pitch you like, with all other notes relative to the starting point of ‘Sa’. Each of these syllables is tied to a deeper meaning, and I encourage you to feel into where your emotions guide you when holding one note or moving from one note to another.

Here you are asked to find a form of life, a tree, plant, crystal, or other source of energy, and drop into presence with it, asking to receive information to sing the song of this being into the form of your voice. Let your imagination guide you here and incorporate all your senses.
