The Sleep Garden

With Lori Joint

Step through the garden gate and discover a gentler way to meet the end of your day. The Sleep Garden is a seven-day journey designed to help you understand some of the common challenges that can make it difficult to settle at night; from a busy mind and a body that still feels “wired,” to lingering worries, unfinished thoughts, and the pressure to make sleep happen. Each lesson explores a simple mindfulness-based approach to rest, followed by an optional guided sleep meditation that brings the day’s teaching to life through the imaginative world of the garden. Along the way, you’ll visit the Moon Pond, Lavender Meadow, Wishing Tree, Moss Library, Hummingbird Sanctuary, and Starlight Conservatory. Through these practices, you’ll learn to relate differently to nighttime thoughts, help the body transition from doing to resting, set down what you cannot carry tonight, and give unfinished problems permission to wait until morning. Rather than forcing sleep, The Sleep Garden invites you to create the conditions for rest; one quiet step at a time. By the end of our journey, you’ll have a collection of simple practices and familiar garden imagery you can return to whenever you need a little help letting go of the day.

Lesson 1

Entering The Garden

Sleep isn’t something we accomplish, it’s something we allow. In this opening lesson, we’ll explore how the effort to make sleep happen can sometimes make it harder to settle, and begin shifting from striving toward allowing. You’ll also learn how gentle imagery can give a busy mind somewhere soft to rest its attention as you transition from your day into sleep.

Lesson 2

The Moon Pond: Letting Thoughts Pass

Why does the mind sometimes seem to get louder as soon as everything becomes quiet? In this lesson, we’ll explore why thoughts, memories, plans, and worries often surface at bedtime and practice relating to them differently. Rather than trying to stop thinking, you’ll learn how to notice thoughts without automatically following them, allowing the mind to settle in its own time.

Lesson 3

The Lavender Meadow: Teaching The Body To Rest

There’s a difference between being tired and being ready for sleep. In this lesson, we’ll explore how the body may still be carrying the momentum of the day even when you’re exhausted. Through simple physical and sensory cues, you’ll learn ways to create a gentler transition from doing to resting without turning relaxation into another thing you have to accomplish.

Lesson 4

The Wishing Tree: Setting Down What You’re Carrying

Letting go doesn’t mean that something no longer matters. In this lesson, we’ll explore the difference between caring about something and carrying it with us throughout the night. You’ll practice recognizing what may be beyond your control and permitting yourself to temporarily set down worries, responsibilities, and uncertainties so you can rest.

Lesson 5

The Moss Library: Letting Unfinished Things Wait

Bedtime can easily become a meeting with everything we haven’t finished, decided, remembered, or figured out. In this lesson, we’ll explore the difference between useful problem-solving and nighttime mental looping. You’ll learn how to mentally “bookmark” unfinished thoughts and permit yourself to let questions, decisions, and plans wait until morning.

Lesson 6

The Hummingbird Sanctuary: Receiving Rest

After several days of practicing how to release what keeps us awake, this lesson shifts toward receiving what is already available to us. We’ll explore why rest doesn’t need to be earned and how our habit of striving can sometimes follow us into bedtime. You’ll practice allowing yourself to receive stillness, support, and rest without needing to accomplish anything first.

Lesson 7

The Starlight Conservatory: Bringing The Garden Home

In our final lesson, we’ll bring together the practices you’ve explored throughout The Sleep Garden and consider how they can become part of your own relationship with rest. Rather than needing to recreate the entire garden each night, you’ll learn how to return to whichever image, practice, or reminder you need, and discover that sometimes the most important skill is simply knowing how to gently return.
