Mindfulness And Self-Compassion: Living With ADHD

With Mark Bertin

Managing ADHD well asks a lot of people, whether it's staying on top of medications, building healthier habits, or keeping up with therapy. Plans and aspirations far too easily fall apart when someone is exhausted, stressed, and buried in self-blame. Mindfulness and self-compassion aren't add-ons to ADHD care; they're a foundation. That is because until someone truly understands how ADHD has been shaping their life and can meet that experience with kindness, practical strategies are difficult to understand and to integrate. When people feel steadier, less reactive, and less tangled in shame, they're in a completely different position to follow through on all the rest that ADHD requires of them. This class covers the full picture of evidence-based ADHD care, built on the understanding that nothing works as well without a compassionate, clear-sighted view of ADHD - and yourself.

Lesson 1

Clarity And Compassion As A Foundation Of ADHD Care

ADHD is more than many people understand at first, a medical condition impacting a large self-management skill set called executive function. As ADHD directly affects stress, relationships, emotional regulation, and self-esteem for many people, a foundation built on awareness and self-compassion fundamentally supports all of ADHD care.

Lesson 2

A Six-Part Executive Function Based Model For Understanding ADHD

ADHD undermines a wide-ranging skill set called executive function that includes almost anything requiring 'management' in life - attention and behavior as a start, but also organization, projects and time, health routines, emotion, and more.

Lesson 3

Simple But Not Easy: Realistic Caring Steps Towards Change

To manage ADHD fully requires seeing it with clarity and awareness - mindfulness - as well as self-compassion. ADHD affects productivity, relationships, and, as has been said, 'doing what you know.' To handle any change in life requires seeing the situation clearly and defining realistic steps that lead to longer-term changes.

Lesson 4

Evidenced-Based ADHD Care

No one intervention manages ADHD fully on its own. Once we understand ADHD as an impersonal (since it's not anyone's fault) condition undermining executive function-based skills, over time, we can monitor and make changes in four areas of life: School and work, behavior-based interventions like therapy or coaching, health routines, and medication.

Lesson 5

Health Care Routines And Living With ADHD

Frustrating as it is for most of us, staying on top of health care routines is even more difficult, yet more vital, when living with ADHD. That's because ADHD makes sustaining health care routines more challenging, and yet, everyday health care routines impact ADHD symptoms and well-being. This makes discussing health care routines not only important for ADHD care but also a useful place to integrate self-compassion.

Lesson 6

You Don't Say: ADHD Affects Communication Too

One of the most under-discussed but life-changing aspects of ADHD to address relates to its direct impact on communication. It is a perfect example of how evidence-based interventions, understanding executive function, and nonjudgmental, compassionate awareness support all of ADHD care.

Lesson 7

A Compassion And Integrated Approach To ADHD Care

Compassion and detailed ADHD care are built from the foundation upwards. Start with self-compassion and emotional regulation, understand executive function, and then use these vital perspectives to adjust all the rest that goes into ADHD management to set yourself or your clients up to thrive.
