Grief That Has No Name: Navigating Unseen Loss

With François de Neuville

Some grief has no funeral. No ritual. No name. It’s the grief of what never happened, what never came, or who you never got to become. In this intimate four-part course, François explores unseen loss, identity, resilience, and what it means to keep walking when life doesn’t go the way you hoped. Not to fix the grief. But to learn how to carry it.

Meet your Teacher

François is an author, expedition leader, filmmaker, and adventurer who has spent years exploring resilience, adversity, and the human capacity to endure difficult experiences. A former military officer and survivor of the 2018 Indonesian tsunami, his work is shaped by both personal hardship and a lifelong pursuit of growth through challenge. This course draws from François’s own experience with a form of grief that often goes unrecognized—the loss of a future he deeply hoped for but never came to pass: becoming a father. Through personal reflection, storytelling, and hard-earned insight, he offers a compassionate space for those carrying losses that have no clear name, ritual, or place to be mourned.

Lesson 1

The Grief With No Name

Some losses come with a word, a ritual, and people who understand what you’re going through. Others arrive quietly, without a name, a funeral, or a place to mourn. In this lesson, François explores the grief that comes from what never happened, the future that never arrived, the relationship that never became what you hoped, or the version of yourself that never got to exist. You’ll learn why this kind of loss is real, why it often feels so lonely, and why you don’t need anyone else’s permission to grieve it.

Lesson 2

Why Nobody Says the Right Thing

When you finally find the courage to talk about your pain, most people instinctively reach for a solution, a silver lining, or a reason. Not because they don’t care, but because sitting with someone else’s grief can be uncomfortable. In this lesson, François explores why people often say the wrong thing, what support actually feels like when you’re hurting, and how to become the kind of person who can stay present when there’s nothing to fix.

Lesson 3

The Identity You Built Around It

This isn't disappointment. Disappointment fades. Grief doesn't, because you weren't mourning a missed opportunity. You were mourning a version of yourself. This lesson is about the difference and what it looks like to stop waiting for the pain to leave before you start living.

Lesson 4

Carrying It, A Poem For The Road

You don't get rid of grief like this. You learn to read the weight and keep walking. This lesson ends with a poem, for those who need somewhere to put it down for a moment before picking it up again.
