In this reflective episode of "Five Minutes in Nature," Liz Scott sits beside a seemingly lifeless meadow in the heart of January, contemplating the hidden potential lying beneath the surface. Though the ground appears barren, seeds and bulbs wait patiently for the right conditions to bloom—just as our own untapped potential lies within us, awaiting its moment. Liz invites you to trust in nature’s timing and your inner wisdom, knowing that clarity and growth will emerge when the time is right.

Hello and welcome.

My name is Liz Scott and I'm inviting you to join me each day in January to spend five minutes reflecting in nature.

And today I am sitting on a bench beside what is,

In the summer,

A wildflower meadow.

It's full of long grasses with bending seed heads and poppies and dandelions and buttercups and different pockets of coloured daisies that come up in the summer months.

But right now all I can see is,

Beyond the carpet of orange,

Dry fallen leaves,

Is just dead earth.

There is grass that has been cut and fallen back and it's now yellowy and this whole place looks dead.

But I know that beneath the surface there are seeds and bulbs that are present beneath the soil.

Today I am taking my inspiration from knowing that in the deadness of January,

And for me January is probably the month that feels where life has completely stopped,

Even though we're beyond the darkest day,

Everything feels like it's impossible that life is ever going to spring again.

And that's what it's like here today.

But what I want to invite you to imagine is that beneath this soil there are seeds and there are bulbs and there are roots that are waiting for the cool and warmth of spring to bring them up through the earth.

And my reflection today is on what we have within us that might be deeply hidden.

We might not be aware of it.

What seeds and bulbs and potential plants do we have within us that are waiting for the right conditions to come forth?

It might be that you feel yourself a bit confused with what's going on in life at the moment.

Maybe you feel at a crossroads and you're seeking the right answer,

But that right answer just seems to elude you.

My request is that if that is what's happening for you,

If you feel confusion,

If you feel uncertain,

If you're seeking an answer and you just can't find that answer,

Is to know that within you the potential of that answer is waiting to bloom,

Is waiting to come forth.

And you can't force it.

You can't hurry it.

You can no more hurry the answer or the clarity to confusion than I can hurry these seeds and plants and poppies and daisies and crocuses to come forth before their time.

And I want you to realize as you settle your mind now and you feel within you,

I want you to feel the potential that might be within your mind,

Within your soul.

Like the seeds that are here in the soil,

What is in the soil of your mind?

Because you are part of the deeper intelligence,

This deeper intelligence that is nature,

That lets the seeds and bulbs know when it is time to grow.

And this deeper intelligence is also within you,

Waiting to be expressed through you.

When the spring arrives,

The seeds will grow.

When the right time is there for you,

The answers will grow in your mind.

It just might be not the right time at the moment.

So for me and for you,

Let's thank the seeds beneath the soil.

When life seems at its most dead,

When nothing seems alive,

Know that the seeds exist beneath the soil and know that the answers lie within you.

And this deeper intelligence will awaken the seeds within you and the essence of your spirit will be given the breath of life to come forth when the time is right.

Just trust it will emerge and that right now it might not be the right time,

But the right time will come.

And when the time comes,

The seeds of potential and creativity within you will grow when the time is right.
