Moon Phase Yoga With Julie Peters

With Julie Peters

When we start paying attention to the phases of the moon, we quickly tap into the different energies that are present in the quiet, thoughtful New Moon, the intense Full Moon, and the more balanced Waxing and Waning half moons. Our yoga practice can support that kind of paying attention, especially within our own bodies and in our inner worlds. These four yoga classes are all Yin/Flow style classes, incorporating some long-held Yin and Restorative postures balanced with more dynamic flowing movements to build strength and mobility. Each one is designed to fit with the energy of the moon in its phase. I recommend beginning on or around a New Moon (within three days is ideal) and practising each week for four weeks, which will take you through an entire moon cycle. Classes are designed for all levels with options for everyone, so please listen to your body. We do use props in this class, which could be yoga bricks and bolsters, but you can also use pillows and whatever else you have at home. Ensure you talk to your doctor or health practitioner before starting any new form of exercise if you have any concerns. Neither Julie Peters nor Insight Timer will be held liable for any injuries or damages caused during these classes. Participation implies consent to practice.

Lesson 1

New Moon: Yin/Flow Yoga With Moon Salutations

In this class, we work with some gentle, long-held Yin/Restorative postures as well as a more dynamic sequence, namely the Moon Salutation, which is a calming sequence ideal for the darker, calmer energies of the New Moon. Contemplate your intentions for this coming moon cycle and align those intentions with your body and mind. Practice this class within about three days of the New Moon.

Lesson 2

Waxing Half Moon: Balancing And Building Yin/Flow

This practice is oriented around side bends and balancing postures, which are ideal for the energy of the waxing half moon. Now we tend to have a bit more energy as the moon cycle builds, and we can work a little bit harder. Moon energies are also literally balanced on the half moon, and sometimes balancing postures feel easier at this time (not all the time!). Practice this class within about three days of the waxing half moon (about a week after the New Moon).

Lesson 3

Full Moon Yin/Flow: Reflection And Release

Full Moons can be energizing, but they can also be exhausting. The light of the moon is intense and can bring forward emotions that are normally hidden in the dark. Yin/Flow is especially helpful around this time because it can help us reflect on what's been happening and let it go, whether we're feeling active and energized or sluggish and slow. Practice this class within about three days of the Full Moon.

Lesson 4

Waning Moon: Will And Surrender Yin/Flow

On the Waning Moon, we integrate, process, release, edit, and clear, preparing for the fresh start of the next new moon. Energies are still relatively balanced on the Waning Half Moon, but we can be a little more about releasing and letting go than on the building side of the Waxing Half Moon. Practice this class within about three days of the Waning Half Moon (about a week after the Full Moon). From here, if you like, you can go back to the beginning and practice this cycle again, beginning on the New Moon.
