Stoic Social Confidence: A Practice For Meeting Social Anxiety

With Jon Brooks

Social anxiety can turn a simple conversation into a test. Jon Brooks knows that experience from the inside. In this ten-lesson audio course, he uses practical Stoic ideas to explore the judgement behind social fear, the limits of trying to control other people's opinions, and the small actions that help confidence become a practice rather than a performance. Each lesson combines an edited conversation with a short reflection and one everyday exercise. You will practise examining impressions, hearing the prediction beneath fear, choosing the next courageous step, building social momentum, speaking with greater congruence, and returning attention to the person in front of you. This course features a conversation between Jon Brooks and Eric Brown. Eric appears with permission, and Jon confirms the rights to use the recorded video and audio in this course. This course is educational and is not therapy or a substitute for professional mental-health care. Listen to one lesson at a time, try the practice, and return the next day for the next rep.

Lesson 1

Stop Fighting Social Anxiety

Notice the difference between anxiety being present and the extra judgement that it should not be there. Practise naming what is present in plain language, then take one small chosen action without waiting for calm or treating discomfort as failure. This educational lesson is not therapy or a substitute for professional mental-health care.

Lesson 2

Hear The Prediction

Identify the social prediction your mind is presenting and compare it with what actually happens, including what remains unknown. Practise hearing the thought as a forecast rather than a fact, then choose the next action that is still available to you.

Lesson 3

Examine The Impression

Use the Stoic distinction between an impression and assent to separate a bare event from the judgement attached to it. Practise pausing, describing only what happened, and deciding whether the first interpretation deserves your agreement.

Lesson 4

Take The Next Courageous Step

Build a short ladder of ordinary social actions and complete the first step without grading the performance. Practise choosing a manageable act of courage, allowing discomfort to be present, and measuring the rep by whether you took the step.

Lesson 5

Build Social Momentum

Use one low-pressure contact as a warm-up before a more demanding interaction. Practise creating social momentum through a simple greeting or brief exchange, then carry that attention and willingness into the next conversation.

Lesson 6

Choose Right Action Over Performance

Shift attention from managing your image to the quality of action that is actually yours to choose. Practise measuring a social moment by attention, honesty, care, and conduct rather than by whether you looked confident or received approval.

Lesson 7

Practise Congruence

Say one honest and proportionate thing without over-explaining, then assess the action by honesty and care rather than approval. Practise letting your words and behaviour move a little closer to the values you want to express.

Lesson 8

Let Presence Be Enough

Move attention from self-monitoring back to the person, the room and the next genuine response. Practise listening for what is actually being said, noticing the situation around you, and letting presence be enough for this moment.

Lesson 9

Build Stoic Social Confidence

Separate what is up to you in a social situation from reputation, outcome, and other people's reactions. Practise placing your effort into preparation, attention, words, and conduct while allowing the response to remain uncertain.

Lesson 10

Make Confidence A Daily Practice

Turn the course into a seven-day plan built around small actions and repeatable reps. Choose one modest social action each day, repeat at least two of them, and practise returning after a missed day without turning the lapse into a verdict.
