The transcendent music of twelfth-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen (1089-1176) is all about the breath. Each line of music takes place in the span of one breath. Not constrained by a steady pulse there is a natural ebb and flow to the music like the story being told by the slow lapping of the ocean surf.
