Breath as Brushstroke is a grounded meditation practice that invites you to connect each inhale and exhale with the gentle, intentional motion of a painter’s brush. As your breath moves through you, it becomes a tool for presence, sweeping away distraction and layering stillness onto the canvas of your awareness. This practice encourages deep listening to your body and surroundings, anchoring you in the moment with each mindful breath stroke to support you in getting started with your creative practice.

Let's begin by finding a comfortable position.

Allow your feet to touch the ground if that feels good.

Let your hands rest in your lap or at your sides.

If you feel safe,

You may gently close your eyes or just soften your gaze toward the floor or something else in front of you.

Take a deep breath in through your nose and slowly exhale through your mouth.

Allow your shoulders to drop,

Your mouth to unclench,

And let the weight of your body be supported by your seat or the floor beneath you.

Begin to notice your breath,

Not changing it,

Just following it.

Feel the inhale come in and the exhale leave the body.

You may feel it in your chest,

Your belly,

Or at the tip of your nose.

Let the breath anchor you to this moment.

Inhale and exhale.

Like a wave rising and falling.

You are safe to arrive in this moment.

Exactly as you are.

Now imagine each breath as a gentle brush stroke.

Each inhale is a smooth,

Steady stroke across a blank canvas.

There's no need to paint a picture,

Just let the movement happen inside you.

Inhale,

A clean new stroke.

Exhale,

A blending,

A softening.

Maybe your breath feels like watercolor,

Light and flowing.

Maybe it feels like bold acrylic,

Strong and steady.

There's no right or wrong way for your breath to move.

No right or wrong way for creativity to show up.

Each breath you take is preparing your hands,

Your heart,

And your mind to express something that words alone cannot say.

Let your imagination stretch quietly with your breath.

Let color and feeling swirl gently in your awareness.

Trust your body,

Trust your rhythm,

Trust your creative voice.

Begin to bring awareness back to your body.

Feel your hands,

Your feet,

Your seat.

Maybe gently wiggle your fingers or toes.

Notice the sounds around you in the room.

And when you're ready,

Softly open your eyes.

Your breath is still with you.

And now your creative self is ready.

You may begin your art making whenever you feel called.
