The Story of Mankind was written and illustrated by Dutch-American journalist, professor, and author Hendrik Willem van Loon and published in 1921. In 1922, it was the first book to be awarded the Newbery Medal for its outstanding contribution to children's literature.

I am on Part 20 and loving The Story of Mankind. I have chronic sleep issues around falling and staying alseep. I’ve been listening to the parts for a year or more as a bedtime story to put me to sleep or in the middle of the night. Amadeus’ voice and delivery is so soothing. So far I’ve only heard the beginning Part 20 of the story and then off to sleep land. Overtime I’ve actually heard to and enjoyed up through Part 16 either because there have been middle of the night sessions when I could not go back to sleep and I ended up hearing a whole chapter about Rome, Carthage & Hannibal's March. Sometimes I decide to just listen to the story during the day to enjoy the book over time. I even found copies in the library so I can read some of the chapters and see van Loon's illustrations. Yes, I am thoroughly enjoying this wonderful children's book and the rest it provides me.
