LeAnn leads us in this 30-minute practice, which is a series of specific tones with different vowels and directional energies that warm up the voice and bring heart, body, and mind into resonance. She learned this practice from the Indian classical singing teacher Sudhanshu Sharma and practices it herself nearly every day. This recording was made live during the Embodied Sound festival at Ängsbacka Course and Festival Center in 2024.

Hello and welcome to Warm-Up Vocal Toning.

Let's take three deep breaths together.

We begin with mmm.

Now we have the tone ha.

This is with a wide open mouth,

Wide enough to bite an apple.

Ha.

This goes vertically up from the ground,

Up the spine,

Through the heart,

Through the crown,

And out to the stars.

Ha.

Next we have nah.

And this comes down from the stars,

Down through the crown,

Down the spine,

Vertically into the ground.

Nah.

Next we have hree,

H-r-i,

Hree,

With a wide smiling mouth.

This sound goes horizontally from our heads.

Hree.

Now we have fnu,

H-n-u.

So we've had the vertical lines going upwards and downwards,

The horizontal line going across,

And now in the point where they meet in the middle of the head in the third eye,

We have fnu.

You can turn your eyes inwards if you like to focus on the point.

Fnu.

Ng,

O-n-g.

This radiates out from the point we were just focused on in the third eye.

We use ng,

Ong,

To vibrate up into the soft palate and into the nose area.

Ong.

Next we have the whole string of sounds together.

Ha going up from the ground vertically.

Nah,

Downward vertical.

Hree,

Going horizontally.

Fnu,

Focused on the point in the third eye.

A short breath,

And then ong,

Radiating outwards.

Ah.

Next comes un,

With a long un.

This helps clear out the cobwebs in the back of the head.

Un.

Mm,

And you can go right up into the mm nasal sound to get your head vibrating.

This helps clear the front of the head,

Releases nitric oxide and oxytocin.

Hum.

Now we move down to the chest,

To our hearts,

With g,

An aspirated g.

This is down here.

This goes horizontally,

Wide,

Smiling mouth.

Yee.

This goes from the heart.

Now we stay with the g vibrating in the chest,

But we focus now on back up on the third eye,

The middle of the head,

With goo.

And as you feel the resonance up in the third eye,

You can turn your eyes inward again if you like,

And bring it into resonance with the chest vibration,

The heart vibration.

Goo.

Let's breathe together for a moment.

As you breathe in,

You can feel the energy coming up your left arm,

Into your heart.

Breathing out,

Down.

Let's tone together on an oh this morning.

Come in and out as you need to breathe.

Breathe in to begin.
