When most people hear the word Reiki,
One of two things usually happens.
Either they have no idea what it is,
Or they picture someone lying on a table with hands hovering gently above them.
And while that image is part of Reiki,
It is only one small part of a much larger and deeply beautiful system of healing and living.
Let me share with you what Reiki is and what it means to live it as a way of life.
Reiki,
In its literal translation,
Is universal life force energy.
The energy that exists within all living beings.
The invisible but very real force that animates us,
Connects us,
And sustains us.
There are many forms of Reiki practice around the world today,
But what I am speaking about specifically is the Yasui system of natural healing,
The original system created by a Japanese businessman and spiritual seeker named Mikao Yasui.
Hisui's vision was simple but profound.
He believed that within every human being lives what he called the great bright light.
And innate wholeness,
A natural state of peace,
Happiness,
And health.
His system was designed not to give people something they didn't have,
But to help them uncover what's already there.
Yosui also taught something that I find deeply beautiful.
That before a Reiki practitioner can truly heal others,
They must first do the work of healing themselves.
And that principle is at the very heart of what it means to live the Reiki way.
Now how did Reiki find its way to the West?
After Yasui's passing,
His teachings were carried forward by his successor,
Chihiro Hayashi.
It was through Hayashi that a remarkable Hawaiian woman named Hawaii Takata learned Reiki while seeking treatment in Japan for a debilitating illness.
The Reiki treatments she received were so transformative that she went on to study the practice herself.
And eventually brought those teachings home to Hawaii and later began teaching on the U.
S.
Mainland.
And from there,
Reiki spread across the Western world.
Takata's granddaughter,
Phyllis Ryumoto,
Who became a Reiki grandmaster,
Later codified Yusui's teaching into what we now know as the four aspects of Yusui Shiki Ryoho.
The Reiki system of natural healing.
These four aspects are the foundation of a Reiki lifestyle and they are the healing practice.
This is the hands-on work.
Giving and receiving Reiki and practicing daily self-Reiki to support your own healing and well-being.
Personal Development.
This is the inner work,
Using the five Reiki precepts as daily guiding principles to cultivate greater self-awareness,
Emotional balance,
And conscious living.
Spiritual Discipline.
This is the daily practice of sitting with the precepts,
Practicing specific Reiki meditations such as Doshin Kokyoho and sitting in Gassho position,
A posture of reverence and gratitude that anchors us in presence and intention.
And the mystic order.
This is the deepest layer of the lived experience of non-duality,
The gradual beautiful realization that you are not separate from the universe.
That you are one with all living things.
That you,
At your very core,
Are Reiki.
So what does it actually look like to live a Reiki lifestyle?
It looks like beginning each day with the five Reiki precepts.
Those five gentle but powerful invitations.
It looks like a few minutes of daily self-reiki,
A moment of stillness in gassho.
A conscious breath before you react.
A choice to meet yourself and others with kindness,
Even on the hard days.
And here's something I want you to know.
You do not need to be a certified Reiki practitioner to live a Reiki lifestyle.
These principles,
These practices,
This way of moving through the world,
They're available to everyone.
The only distinction is that the hands-on practice of offering Reiki to others does require proper training and certification.
But the lifestyle,
The daily commitment to peace,
To presence,
To kindness,
To healing yourself from the inside out.
That begins the moment you say yes to it.
Living a Reiki lifestyle is simple.
And I want to be clear,
Simple does not mean easy.
Working with the precepts,
Showing up for your daily practice,
Doing the inner work of personal development,
These things take genuine commitment and real courage.
But they are accessible to every single one of us,
Regardless of background,
Belief.
Or where you are starting from.
Because Reiki is not something outside of you.
It is not something you have to earn or achieve.
It is already within you.
And living the Reiki way is simply the practice of remembering that.
One day,
One breath at a time.
I invite you to take the first step on a path to peace,
Happiness,
And health by living the Reiki way to uncover your big bright light.
