Sleep is the body letting go,
Not the mind.
The mind can keep going for a while,
That's normal,
That's how the mind works.
But the body,
Given the right conditions,
Already knows how to release.
It doesn't need instructions,
It just needs permission.
Tonight the practice is not to fall asleep,
The practice is to give your body permission to begin the descent.
That's all sleep actually is,
A descent,
A slow handing over of the day to whatever the night does next.
You don't have to push toward it,
You don't have to chase it,
You don't have to perform readiness,
You just have to stop standing in its way.
Notice your jaw,
You don't need to unclench it,
Just notice.
Notice your shoulders,
Are they near your ears,
You don't need to drop them,
Just notice.
Notice your belly,
Held in,
Pulled tight,
You don't need to release it,
Just notice.
Notice the back of your neck,
Notice the space behind your eyes,
Notice the hands,
Are they curled even slightly?
None of this needs fixing,
The noticing alone is enough to begin softening it.
The body lets go in its own time,
It doesn't respond to commands,
It responds to safety.
So this is the message tonight,
You are safe enough to rest,
Nothing is required from you right now.
The mind can keep thinking,
That's allowed,
The body can begin to descend,
That's also allowed.
You don't have to choose between them,
Sleep doesn't ask the mind to be quiet first,
It just waits for the body to feel safe enough to release the day.
You don't have to fall asleep on schedule,
You don't have to do this right,
You are allowed to drift or to stay awake or to lie.
