Take a moment to find a position that's comfortable to you.
Either sitting or lying down.
Face your hands on your lap.
On your heart.
Or where it feels just right for you.
Soften your gaze and close your eyes if that feels good Take a moment to ground yourself in your breath with me.
Taking a deep breath in through your nose.
And out through your mouth.
Oh.
Amen.
In and out.
To the end.
And out.
So often we find ourselves waiting for happiness to find us.
We seek the intense joys in the validation of a promotion.
Or the bliss of a birth of a newborn baby.
But life can't be the kind of continuous intense joy that drowns out all the other sensations.
The joy that makes you forget the pain of childbirth.
Or the disappointment of your previous failures.
The joy that makes you forget the rest of your problems,
If only for a brief while.
This type of joy burns intensely but then fades quickly and leaves you with an emptiness that can only be filled by chasing and catching the next fleeting joy.
But this is not without hope.
This is not meant to say that there is not joy and happiness for you.
Every day there is joy that is happening all around you.
Just waiting for you to slow down and pay attention.
There is the joy of waking up in the morning and feeling the warm embrace of the covers There is the joy in a cup of coffee or tea as you start off your day.
There is a joy in having a chat with a dear friend.
Or the excitement when you get home and your pet sees you for the first time.
We have joy happening all around us,
All day,
Every day.
If we bother to stop and just notice it.
Not only do we have joy happening throughout our days,
We also have the ability to create joy through small gestures and everyday kindness.
What if finding happiness is not about finding intense joy?
But creating and noticing all of the small joys that are already happening within our life.
What are the small joys in your life that are happening right now?
Take a moment to focus on your breath.
Taking a deep breath in through your nose.
And out through your mouth.
And in through your nose.
And out through your mouth.
And the N.
And out.
Now allow your breath to come back to its natural rhythm.
What are the small joys in your life that are happening right now that you are missing out on?
What can you do for yourself or others to create additional joy in your life?
Donna Ashworth writes,
Joy does not arrive with fanfare on a red carpet strewn with the flowers of a perfect life.
Joy sneaks in as you pour a cup of coffee,
Watching the sun hit your favorite tree just right and you usher joy away because you are not ready for it.
Your house is not as it must be for such a distinguished guest.
But joy cares nothing for your messy home.
Or your bank balance or your waistline you see.
Joy is supposed to slither through the cracks of your imperfect life.
That's how joy works.
You cannot invite her,
You can only be ready when she appears.
And hug her with meaning because in this very moment,
Joy chose you.
Notice the you right now.
The you that sees the joy in the small things.
The you that creates joy through their being.
See the shift in you.
The one that is open to joy.
Joy is all around you if you just take the time to notice it.
Take a moment to bring yourself to the present.
Pay attention to anything you may.
EAR or feel.
Wiggle your fingers and your toes as you gently open your eyes.
