Hi,
This is Aisha from the Purposeful Path.
And welcome to the Conflicted Heart Series.
I'm so glad you're here.
Today I'd like to explore what it means to steady ourselves when life feels difficult.
If you've ever wondered why conflict feels so exhausting,
You're not alone.
How many of us have been taught that conflict is something that is destructive?
Or detrimental.
Or should be avoided at all costs.
And that we don't have the time,
Capacity,
Or emotional bandwidth to engage it.
So we shut down.
People please,
Or become defensive.
Well,
What if those beliefs weren't entirely true?
What if they were preventing us from discovering opportunities for growth?
Connection,
And deeper understanding through difficult conversations.
Wherever humans share space,
Conflict is inevitable.
We each carry different experiences,
Values,
And ways of making sense of the world.
Sometimes the same words can have a completely different effect on two people in the same room.
It's not to say that we can't find common ground.
But we can't assume it.
We have to attend to it.
And steward it.
Next time you're in conflict.
Think about what you might be bringing to the conversation.
Your communication style.
Your priorities.
Your sense of urgency.
And the stories you carry.
And by stories,
I mean the way we see or remember events that becomes our narrative,
Something we believe is the absolute truth and that never gets questioned.
Even if it's hard,
Allow yourself to consider what that might look like for the other person as well.
I don't mean putting them under a microscope.
I mean,
Get curious about the beliefs you hold about their experience.
How true might they be?
Finally,
I'd like to introduce the idea of looking through a system's lens.
A systems lens asks us to notice the forces shaping a situation that are often invisible.
Histories,
Expectations,
Loyalties,
Roles and patterns we've come to simply accept as the way things are.
Eurosystem Your experiences have shaped how you see the world.
The other person is a system too.
And so is the relationship between you.
So,
How do you steady yourself in a difficult situation?
Start with the first step.
Take a pause.
That's how we interrupt the reaction loop.
And then ask yourself.
What else might be true here?
What systems might I not be seeing yet?
Until next time.
Be gentle with your conflicted heart.
You'll find your way by returning to yourself with curiosity and compassion.
