Don't close your eyes,

Keep them open.

Let them land on something,

Anything.

A chipped mug,

A crack in the wall.

Let the realness of this moment anchor you.

You're not here to escape,

You're here to stay inside the fire.

Let your breath come however it wants to,

Ragged,

Fine,

Too fast,

That's real.

This isn't about mastering stillness.

This is about meeting yourself,

And others,

Where it's hard to breathe.

Empathy sounds beautiful until you actually have to live it,

Until you're across from someone who feels like everything you oppose,

And your gut says no,

Nope,

Not them,

But your spirit says stay anyway.

So here you are,

Think of that person,

Yes that one,

The one whose story you don't want to hear,

Whose choices repulse you,

Maybe they've hurt you,

Maybe they just stand for something that grates your bones.

Don't dress it up,

Don't go soft now,

You're not being asked to love them,

You're being asked to stay human in their presence.

Let your eyes stay open,

Let your fists stay clenched if they need to.

This isn't surrender,

It's exposure,

It's peeling back the part of you that wants to categorize and just run.

Now take a slow inhale,

Right where you are.

Feel the raw honesty of it.

This is empathy with dirt under its nails.

Say to yourself,

Gently but firmly,

I see you,

I don't agree,

But I will not vanish.

Exhale without performance,

Just let it go.

Feel your body,

The place where resistance lives,

Shoulders,

Chest,

Jaw,

Let it stay,

You're not here to fix the feeling,

You're here to recognize it,

And still choose to remain.

Now remember,

Empathy is not a moral high ground,

It's not passive,

It's not polite,

It's gritty courage,

The kind that holds space for contradictions without resolving.

You can keep your values,

You can keep your fire,

And still,

You choose to witness.

That's radical,

That's rare.

Breathe in,

I can care without agreement,

Breathe out,

I can witness without collapse.

And finally,

Bring your gaze to something steady.

Something that reminds you,

You're still in your body,

Still in your life,

Still standing.

You didn't soften your truth,

You expanded your captivity.

This,

This is the kind of empathy that the world actually needs.
