In this meditation, we use an ancient mantra from the Vedic tradition, Swaha. It was used by the Brahmin priest when making offerings to the sacred fire. In the same way, as we meditate, we offer our thoughts, feelings, and everything that arises within us to the sacred fire of consciousness.

Once again,

Feel the spine,

Feel the sitting bones,

Feel that axis of the spine and feel the breath.

And as you feel the breath,

Once again find the foundation,

Find the same sense of resting in the earth,

Resting in yourself.

We are ultimately our own foundation.

Meaning,

If you think about your whole life and all the experience you've had,

Good,

Bad,

Exciting,

Sad,

All the experience you've ever had have occurred in you,

Of course,

In what you are.

All the memories,

All the emotions,

All the thoughts,

Everything,

All that phenomena happens within you.

All our struggles or our fights,

Hurts,

All that,

All drama,

It's all the mind.

And all happens in the space of the mind.

Our experience of the world happens in the space of our mind.

So,

When we meditate,

We remember the space of the mind,

This inner spaciousness where everything is created and where everything dissolves.

And you feel intuitively that inner space of awareness.

Another name is presence.

It's the space between two thoughts.

And that space is who you really are,

Beyond the shifting states of the mind.

A simple way to get in touch with that space,

To recognize it,

To experience it more fully,

Is by offering your thoughts to the fire of awareness.

It means that whenever you notice thought,

You release it into the fire of awareness.

And you notice the silence that arises as the thought dissolves within awareness.

There's a mantra in the yogic tradition,

And the mantra is swaha,

S-w-a-h-a,

Swaha,

Swaha.

And the mantra is used by the brahmins,

By the priests,

To offer food to the fire.

So,

In this short meditation,

As a thought arises,

You can say the mantra swaha,

And imagine it offering to the inner fire of awareness.

And experience the spaciousness that remains when the thought dissolves.

You can offer feelings.

You can offer everything to this fire.

Let it all be consumed.

So that the only pure inner presence remains,

Swaha,

Swaha,

I offer,

Swaha.

And as you offer every thought,

You will find yourself very easily resting in presence.

You might notice the breath becoming more to the forefront.

Or you might notice your heartbeat.

Moving more to the forefront of your awareness.

And this mantra does not have to be repeated all the time.

Just when you notice you got caught up in thought,

You say the mantra.

And then you simply enjoy the inner spaciousness.

As you move into this inner simplicity,

Notice the inner body,

Notice the sensations that arise.

Notice the feelings.

As you move deeper into your inner landscape,

Swaha,

I offer,

And very gradually direct your awareness to the breath.

Let the breath become deeper.

Move in towards the deep breath.
