Trust Birth
by Karen Wilmot
This is a meditation for anyone who is experiencing fear during pregnancy or fear of birth. While a fear of the unknown is normal and expected, fear can very easily grow and get out of control. The antidote to fear is trust. During this meditation you will be guided to find what trust looks, feels and sounds like to you, and to find ways of feeding your sense of trust in yourself, your body, your baby and your support rather than feeding your fear and insecurity. I recommend listening to this session at least once every trimester as your fears and doubts change to help you deepen your sense of trust. Let go of resistance and move with the flow of your breath and body. Sound quality is best when headphones are used.

Sitting or lying down with your eyes open,
Just notice what is directly in front or ahead of you.
And just bring it into focus,
Noticing the colors,
The textures,
Focusing your gaze,
Looking intently at that.
Bring all the awareness to the eyes as you look.
And now slowly allow them to close down.
Feel the eyelids shutting down.
And notice that softness,
The relaxation,
Imagining all the muscles of the eyelids just letting go as they close down.
And immediately bringing your attention and your awareness inwards and noticing the breathing,
The gentle rise and fall of your chest,
Rising with the in-breath and gently falling with a slow out-breath.
And gently falling with a slow out-breath.
Slow,
Gentle breathing.
Slow,
Gentle breathing.
And imagining that with every in-breath,
You're drawing relaxation into the body.
And with every out-breath,
You're mentally sending that relaxation like a wave starting at the top of the head and moving slowly down like a warm liquid through the body right down to the tips of your toes.
Feel your awareness move to the head.
And imagine the muscles of the scalp just letting go of any tension,
Feeling that relaxation moving down the temples,
The back of the scalp,
The cheekbones,
Your jaw,
The back of the neck.
Allow the jaw to become gently soft and open,
The lips slightly parted.
Notice where your tongue is in your mouth.
And feel that relaxation moving down the neck,
The throat.
You may even find the need or the desire to swallow as the throat softens and relaxes.
And as you do,
You notice that the relaxation doubles.
Feel that relaxation moving into your shoulders and that sense of responsibility that we carry just allowing it to roll off right out the room with the shoulders softening and relaxing down,
Letting go.
Feel that relaxation moving down the chest now.
Acutely aware of that gentle rise and fall of the breath and every breath deepening that sense of relaxation.
Your body just softening,
Letting go.
There's nothing else that matters right now.
There's nowhere else you need to be.
Just allowing yourself to enjoy these moments of quietness,
Stillness.
And just let go.
And let go.
Just becoming relaxed.
Becoming aware of the surface that your body is resting against.
Just imagining it softening,
Shaping to every contour of your body.
It's as if you're floating on a soft,
White,
Fluffy cloud.
Just gently drifting,
Swaying,
And moving deeper and deeper into that sense of stillness and complete relaxation.
Letting go of fear,
Letting go of tension.
Letting go of any thoughts that get in the way of being able to be completely right now in this moment,
In the present,
In the second,
And this complete sense of release.
Become aware of that fullness,
The warmth,
The heaviness of your belly.
Noticing your baby.
Imagining your baby in your womb.
And allowing a picture of your baby to emerge in your mind,
Either as a baby or just a shape or a color.
However your baby chooses to show him or herself to you,
But just feeling that fullness and that sense of love that you hold and carry in the belly and breathing into it,
Feeling so deeply connected.
That relaxation moving down into the hips,
The pelvis,
The thighs,
The knees,
Down into your calves,
Your ankles,
And the soles of the feet.
And with the mind and the body completely relaxed and aware in this present moment,
Feeling deeply connected to your body and your baby,
Allow yourself to become aware of the word trust.
Just quietly and softly repeating in your mind,
Trust.
Trust.
Trust.
What does trust feel like for you?
What does it look like?
And where do you feel that sense of trust in your body?
Where does it make itself known?
And how does it feel?
And how does it feel?
It might be a warmth in your chest,
A tingling in your belly,
A feeling in your hands or your feet.
What does it feel like for you?
Just allow trust to show itself to you.
Just allow trust to show itself to you.
Give it a colour.
What colour represents trust?
Breathe that colour in.
Breathe that colour in.
Imagine that colour gently moving through your body.
Imagine that sense of trust like a small glowing ember.
And with every breath,
You're breathing life into that sense of trust.
And with every breath,
You're breathing life into that sense of trust.
See the colour that you've given it,
Glowing,
Spreading.
Feel the beautiful warmth and comfort of that sense of trust as you breathe into it,
Feeling it moving,
Spreading,
Gently easing into every muscle,
Every cell,
Into your bones,
Into your organs,
A sense of trust like warm liquid.
Breathing it in.
Breathing it in.
Feeling that sense of trust deepening,
Trusting in this moment,
This moment where you feel so deeply relaxed.
Sense of trust in your baby and that deep connection that you feel right now in this moment.
Trust in your body that's carrying this healthy pregnancy.
Trust in your deep sense of inner knowing,
Reassuring you that everything is perfect in this moment.
Trust.
Trusting that deep maternal instinct that's always been there and that's just getting stronger and stronger every day as your pregnancy progresses,
Your baby growing inside of you,
That deep maternal bond getting stronger and stronger and you trust it.
Trust.
You feel that trust moving down,
Swirling around your belly,
Your hips,
Your thighs.
You feel that trust in your chest.
Become aware of your heart beating and you trust your heart beating without you thinking about it.
Just beating life in every moment.
The connection between your heart and your womb,
Every beat of your heart sustaining your baby.
Your blood and your baby's blood.
Every breath carrying richly oxygenated blood to your baby via the placenta.
Absolute trust happening.
And bringing your awareness now to your hands.
Bring the thumbs and the forefingers together and gently rubbing the thumbs along the tips of the fingers and anchor that feeling of deep trust into your body.
Imagine that in any moment in the future when you're feeling uneasy or unsure or anxious that all you need to do is rub the thumbs against the tips of the fingers,
Close your eyes.
Take a deep breath in and out.
Take a deep breath and go back to this feeling of complete trust in the present moment.
Of complete trust in your body and your baby and your pregnancy.
Of complete trust in your sense of inner knowing and your deep maternal bond and instinct.
Gently rubbing the thumbs against the fingertips and anchoring that deep sense of trust into every cell of your body.
And you can return to that deep sense of trust at any given moment,
At any moment,
Day or night,
Now and tomorrow and in the future.
And every day the sense of trust in your body and your baby and your pregnancy grows stronger and stronger.
The more stronger it grows,
The more you trust it.
And the more you trust it,
The stronger it grows.
So by the time your baby is ready to be born,
By the time that your body is ready to give birth,
And you experience new and different sensations that you've never experienced before,
You trust them.
You're able to go deep and connect and feel and trust whatever it is that you're feeling.
And trust every new sensation that it's taking you on that new journey into motherhood.
And in those moments after birth when you're holding your baby,
Crying in your arms,
And you're unsure and you're uncertain,
Do I feed,
Don't I feed,
Do I hold her,
Do I put her down,
You close your eyes and you connect with that sense of trust and that sense of the present moment.
And you trust your inner knowing and your sense and your connection in that deep maternal bond.
And you look into your baby's eyes and you know,
And you know what to do in that moment.
And you trust.
And once again take a deep in-breath.
Deepening that sense of trust.
Once again anchoring it into every cell of your body.
And then slowly bring your awareness back to the present moment.
Wriggle the toes,
Making small little circles with the ankles,
Stretching the fingers.
Gently moving the head from side to side and waking the neck up.
And then taking a deep energizing breath and feeling that energy moving back into the body.
And when you're ready,
Opening your eyes ready.
And continuing with the rest of your day,
Knowing that you've deepened that sense of trust in your body,
Your baby,
And your pregnancy.
