This is a sweet little poem called the "Worry Balloon" to help your child learn how to cope more easily with worrying or sad thoughts that sometimes creep in and take over when we are feeling low. The easy rhythm will help your child to feel more relaxed and sleepy whilst teaching them how to use their breath to blow up an imaginary balloon to which they can attach their worries before watching them float far away.

Hi,

It's Abbey here from the mindful bee to read you a little poem called the worry balloon.

We all know how it feels to be worried or scared or mad about something,

Don't we?

But how can we make ourselves feel better?

Well,

Here's one way you can try if you like.

First,

Get yourself all calm and settled.

You can even close your eyes if it helps.

And don't forget to let me know if it works for you.

The worry balloon.

Have you ever had a thought that brought you way down low?

Perhaps a sadness or some tears that don't know where to go?

Maybe someone told you off or you saw something sad?

Maybe tricky thoughts popped in and your insides just felt bad?

Well,

Sometimes when we feel this way,

Words can come flying out.

I hate you or I just don't care.

Often things we shout.

Sometimes our words get stuck inside and make our throats feel tight.

They make our tummies flutter and our heads feel not quite right.

Sometimes when we're feeling sad or jealous or quite cross,

It feels like we have lost control.

We don't feel our own boss.

And when I feel this horrid,

And I'm sure I'll feel it soon,

I remember what my gran would say.

Just grab a worry balloon.

My worry balloon is round and blue.

Yours might be small and red.

It might be heart-shaped,

Long or thin or bigger than your head.

Whatever you can picture in your mind's eye is just fine.

Imagine your balloon right now,

The small,

Deflated kind.

Imagine that you pick it up,

You bring it to your mouth,

You take a big breath in,

And as you blow a big breath out,

Your worry balloon starts to inflate.

Look,

Look,

It's growing fast.

So take another breath and breathe out slowly like the last.

And one more breath,

A deep breath in.

Hold it there,

Don't make a sound.

Now blow it out until that small balloon is full and round.

Then write your sadness on a string,

Your fears and worries too.

Tie them onto your balloon,

Let go of it,

Then you can watch them fly away,

Every worry,

Fear or care.

Watch them as they disappear up,

Up into the air.

You can do this any time,

Whenever you feel sad,

Whenever you feel worried,

Slightly cross or really mad.

Blow up a million worry balloons and tie those fears on tight.

Then let them go and watch them rush away into the night.
