Hey,

What's up?

It's Cyrus.

In this session,

I'm going to teach you how to enjoy being bored.

And by the end,

You're going to be angry that no one showed you how to do this.

But you got to stick with it till the end for it to make sense.

It takes a moment to kick in.

So just start off by sitting upright in a chair,

Relaxed and alert.

And just sit there and do nothing for a moment.

And notice how it's boring.

And don't do anything about that.

Just learn what boring feels like in your body.

Start to pay attention with your mental spotlight to your body.

Notice what it feels like.

Maybe you notice an impatience feeling or a restless feeling.

Instead of conceptualizing that,

Actually pay attention to what those sensations feel like on a microscopic level in this moment.

Breathe and relax into those sensations now and imagine space opening up around them.

And notice how with this space,

You don't have to do anything about those sensations.

They might be there.

They might evaporate.

But either way,

It's okay that they're there.

Notice how you can just be at ease with the feeling of being bored.

Notice how this is all you're avoiding when you want to pull out your phone or you want to distract yourself or you always want to stimulate yourself in one way or another.

This is really all it is.

Yes,

It's kind of annoying for a moment,

But just notice as you stick with it and just be present in this moment.

Those bored or restless feelings start to lose their power and traction over you.

Keep breathing and relaxing into whatever sensations you notice for another moment,

Allowing everything to flow exactly as it is.

And notice how boredom is just a thought.

The mind says,

I'm bored.

But start to notice and inquire as to what that actually is.

What is boredom?

Just get curious for a moment.

Notice how boredom can be just as simple as a lack of stimulation.

Our brains are attenuated to something more stimulating these days,

So the moment and reality as it is,

Is boring.

But we can start to learn to shift that,

To take the power back.

So just notice the details of the sounds in the room around you in this moment.

Start to pay close attention to the details of the layers of the sounds and the ways they harmonize with each other,

Even if it's very subtle.

And without moving your eyes,

Notice how you can see everything in your field of vision.

And in a relaxed way,

Sweep your eyes around and notice what you see as if you're seeing everything in the visual field for the first time,

With a sense of curiosity.

Notice the visual details and seek out something you haven't seen before,

Or perhaps see something you have seen before in a new way,

With a fresh set of eyes.

And notice how there's like a mental screen that you might be able to visualize on,

And you can notice how you can instantly ignite your imagination and allow yourself to daydream on this mental screen in vivid detail for a moment at will.

Notice how you can relax into the simplicity of the moment,

Even if it appears boring to the mind.

And you can literally relax your muscles in this moment just by allowing them to relax effortlessly,

Without even trying.

Notice how the moment you pay attention to any tension in your body,

You can also just allow it to soften and relax.

And notice how as you do,

You ease deeper into the moment as it is,

In all of its incredible,

Beautiful boringness.

Notice how as you give yourself and your nervous system a moment to adjust to it,

You can actually just enjoy the feeling of relaxation in your body as it is right now,

Without needing to do anything.

Just feeling the subtle tingling buzzing of aliveness and relaxation in your body head to toe with the breath,

As the wave of breath gently,

Subtly moves that energy to and fro for a moment.

And notice how as you gave yourself a few moments to simply adjust,

What was once boring is either no longer boring or significantly less boring,

And perhaps even enjoyable.

Perhaps boring can have a positive connotation as you give yourself time to adjust to it more often.

And I invite you to intentionally cultivate these states of enjoyable boredom for the rest of your day.

Perhaps if you notice yourself in a moment where you're waiting for something,

Or you're idle in some way,

Instead of pulling out your phone,

Just exist and enjoy the feeling in your body as you are in the moment.

Or if you're doing some activity that you would normally listen to music or a podcast during or have a conversation instead,

Just do the activity and enjoy the simple flow and actions of it,

Moment to moment,

Without anything additional,

And practice reveling in the sweetness of that boringness,

So that you can bring more texture,

Richness,

And clarity back into your life more and more every day.

And practice makes progress with this,

So repeat this track as often as it's useful to you.

I invite you to share this track with anyone you think it might serve,

And I thank you for taking this time for yourself today.

I hope you have an incredibly boring day.

In the best way,

Of course.

Thank you for the wisdom! Learning to be bored. It’s a process. I just retired.
