Hello,
This is Tanya Murphy of Embracing Stillness,
And welcome to this Insight Timer,
Christian Meditation on Being Still.
Over the past several weeks,
The whole world has come to a place of stillness.
For some,
That stillness is wonderful.
For others,
That stillness is unsettling.
But today,
I wanted to talk about why stillness becomes unsettling.
One of the things that many people struggle with is the fact that during this moment of stillness,
There's nothing we can do in particular to make the stillness go away.
We are looking at an unseen phenomenon,
A virus that we can't see,
Can't touch,
Can't control,
Can't manipulate.
We just have to be still.
There's beauty in stillness.
There's growth in stillness.
There's maturity that comes in stillness.
And there's spiritual development that happens in moments of stillness.
Exodus 14.
14 says,
The Lord will fight my battles.
I need only be still.
So today I wanted to remind you there's nothing for you to do,
Nothing for you to have to make happen,
Nowhere to go.
Just be still.
So today,
Our meditative practice is simply,
I shall be still.
I shall be still.
I shall be still.
In that stillness,
Pay attention.
What does it sound like as you take in a breath,
As you inhale?
What does it feel like as you fill your lungs with air?
And what does it feel like as you gently exhale?
Releasing tension,
Releasing stress in the body with a long,
Gentle exhale.
What does it sound like in the room that you're in?
Is the ceiling fan going?
Are birds chirping outside of your window?
Do you hear other people in your home moving about?
Is the dog barking?
Is there a TV on in your house?
Can you hear the wind rustling outside of a window?
Tune in.
Be still.
In this moment of stillness,
Where is your mind?
What are the first thoughts that you're having?
I can almost guarantee you that in the moment that we started this brief discussion,
That you have had well over 50 thoughts run through your mind,
And you've had to intentionally bring yourself back to this place of stillness.
Maybe the grocery list pops up.
Maybe it's one of your children's homework that needs to be done for online school.
Maybe you forgot to prepare one particular thing that you wanted for dinner.
Maybe the floor needs sweeping.
It's interesting how when you make an attempt to be still,
A myriad of thoughts come,
But that's normal.
You just simply return to being still.
I shall be still.
Let's rest in stillness for just a moment.
I shall be still.
I shall be still.
I shall be still.
The Lord will fight for me.
I need only be still.
I pray that this meditative practice of just examining stillness has helped you to be able to consider stillness is for your good,
For your growth,
For your benefit,
For your reexamination.
Be still and have a phenomenal day.
