Which path?
Which teacher?
Which universe?
You may have discovered,
When you first step on the spiritual path,
It may feel at a certain point you have entered a vast library of many sections,
Many books.
There are just so many different ideas,
Techniques,
Models of the universe.
There are paths and teachings we could call Eastern,
Paths and teachings we could call Western.
There are paths and teachings we could describe as mystical and perhaps others we could call magical.
There are ancient paths and teachings,
Modern paths and teachings and those that are really a fusion of all of it.
I could go on but you get the idea.
Every model of the universe,
As taught by a teacher or a path,
Can be useful until it stops being useful.
Perhaps a teaching brings great peace for a while.
Perhaps a certain model produces great healing for a while.
The Buddha spoke of this in his parable of the raft.
A man,
Travelling along a path,
Came to a great expanse of water.
As he stood on the shore,
He realised there were great dangers and discomforts around him.
The other shore appeared safe and inviting.
The man looked for a boat or a bridge and found neither,
And with great effort he gathered grass,
Twigs and branches and tied them all together to make a simple raft.
Relying on the raft to keep him afloat,
The man paddled with his hands and feet and reached the safety of the other shore.
At this point should the man drag the makeshift raft along with him or leave it behind?
With this parable the Buddha explained that your dharma or rightful path is like the raft.
It's useful for crossing over but not for holding on to it.
We may enter the library via one teacher,
One particular spiritual door,
And soon find the library is vast.
We may come to the point where we ask ourselves,
Which path,
Which teacher,
Which method,
Which model of the universe,
Which is the right way to connect with my higher self and the divine?
How do I know I'm heading in the right direction?
Many years ago I heard a set of principles from the Hawaiian shamanic system as understood by the teacher Serge Kahili King.
I found these particular principles useful in my own life.
One of them in particular relates to the question of which path,
Which teacher,
Which method,
Which model of the universe.
It could be summed up by the phrase,
Effectiveness is the measure of truth.
The Hawaiian word pono means finding alignment or rightness,
And here rightness means rightness for all beings involved.
This principle states you are most effective when you are in alignment with your truth.
And since all teachings and philosophies are made up,
You can choose and use the one which works for you.
Some paths and teachers teach about love,
Some about healing.
Some teachers perhaps teach you to focus on the positive,
Ignoring the negative,
As if it does not exist,
As if by giving it no energy it will disappear.
Some would teach about upgrading the ego,
Some about embracing the shadow.
Some like me teach about archangels and star races,
And how to live on the earth plane and still have a spiritually connected experience.
I am not claiming I am everyone's cup of tea,
Though I do have the advantage of embracing a number of systems and not feeling I am constrained by any.
At this time of ascension many high frequency souls are here,
Or incarnating here to birth a great light across the planet.
There are many paths,
Many different models,
Many teachers and many models of connecting to the divine.
These incoming souls will each teach what works for them,
They will not teach what does not work for them.
Yet the fact that a system works for another is no guarantee it will work for you.
To come back for a moment to the question,
How do I know I am heading in the right direction?
Well,
I am taking the term right as the Hawaiian shamans understood the term,
Rightness for you and all beings concerned.
Rightness in terms of what your soul wants,
Which may not correlate with what your personality wants.
Please know the universe is always guiding you.
Understand that the universe is a feedback system,
It is seeking to communicate with you.
At the most basic level there will be a communication through your body,
Physical body,
That could be summed up as,
Does your current path and direction bring you alive or not?
If not then some alterations are being called for.
The universe can also speak through your emotions.
This could be summed up as,
Does your current direction bring you joy or not?
The universe can also speak through your mind.
This could be summed up as,
Does your current direction inspire you or not?
The universe is always guiding you.
The universe not only speaks through your body,
Heart and mind,
It can also speak through your outer world,
The outer reality.
It can speak through signs and portents,
Perhaps a random conversation with a stranger,
Perhaps the line of a song,
Perhaps the wind blowing through the trees.
Then again there may be those odd synchronicities or having a deja vu moment.
The universe is always guiding you.
You can always ask the universe the question,
Maybe start with open and closed questions for instance,
Is this the right teacher for me?
Is this the right path for me?
Then wait and see what the universe has to say in the next 48 hours.
It really all boils down to this.
If a path,
Teacher,
Model of the universe really works for you,
Then great,
Keep going.
If not,
Then either something needs to be adjusted or you need to find a different section within the spiritual library.
