This meditation is based on the serenity prayer. It is a powerful reminder that whatever our circumstances, we always have a choice about how we wish to respond. Sometimes the best response is acceptance, but other times it is the courage to act and make a difference. This meditation helps navigate those choices.

Freedom to choose meditation.

Finding yourself a comfortable seating position.

Your legs and feet resting firmly on the ground.

Sitting upright,

Your shoulders relaxed.

Closing your eyes if it feels comfortable to do so.

Becoming aware of your surroundings.

Tuning into any sounds.

Using them to help bring you into this present moment.

And now gently letting them go.

Bringing your focus to the breath.

Feeling the rising of the chest or abdomen on the in-breath.

And the falling on the out-breath.

Spending a minute now following the breath.

Feeling its sense of rhythmic calming.

Thoughts may be arising in your mind.

Gently letting them go.

Bringing your focus back to the breath.

Enjoying this precious moment of calm.

At times when there may be restrictions in our life,

Appreciating the opportunity to also enjoy our freedoms.

Especially the freedom to choose.

To choose how we relate to our thoughts.

The freedom to choose the lens through which we view life.

With this sense of freedom in our mind,

Seeking the serenity to accept the things we cannot change.

The courage to change the things we can.

And the wisdom to know the difference.

Allowing this sentiment to be felt in our body.

Bringing our focus to our breath.

Breathing in acceptance of what we cannot change.

Breathing out any resistance.

Breathing in courage to change the things we can.

Breathing out any unease.

Spending the next minute with our own feelings.

Breathing in acceptance of what we cannot change.

Breathing out any resistance.

Breathing in courage to change the things we can.

Breathing out any unease.

Gradually letting go now of the focus on the breath.

Letting your mind relax.

Becoming aware again of your surroundings,

Any sounds.

Your body sitting here,

Safe and grounded.

Allowing your mind to be free.

Enjoying the freedom to choose.

And when you're ready,

Gradually arising from your meditation.
