This meditation accompanies chapter 5 of my book, Mindfulness Meditation and the Art of Reiki. This is a modification of a classic hara-based meditation which uses the flow of energy as the object of the meditation. When used in a treatment context, it works very well in getting your mind out of the way. As it uses the flow of energy as the object of the meditation, it encourages a greater flow of energy for the benefit of the client as well as helping to develop your awareness and sensitivity

Energy Gate Breathing Meditation Let's begin by establishing our meditation posture and placing our hands in the form of the Cosmic Mudra.

Or if you wish you can simply place your hands,

Palms down,

On your legs or loosely in your lap.

If you wish to place a cushion in your lap to rest your hands on you can do this.

It helps to keep the chest open and expansive.

Now gently take your mind around your body and check that your posture is solid and stable.

Make sure that your spine is straight but not overextended.

Your spine should be resting in a natural S shaped curve.

If you are using a chair make sure that you are not leaning against the back of it unless of course you need the extra support and that your feet are planted firmly on the floor.

If you can't reach the floor you may place a block or cushion there for your feet to sit on.

Make sure that your body is natural and relaxed.

There should be no sense of straining.

Check that your shoulders are not tense and as you breathe out consciously allow any tension in the shoulders to slip away.

You should feel a sense of openness in the chest.

Check that your head is balanced gently imagining that you are supporting the sky with the crown of your head.

Now close your eyes or half close your eyes and let your gaze fall gently a few feet in front of you.

There should be a sense of quiet dignity about your posture.

Now take three breaths breathing in up the spine and breathing out over the head as if it were a waterfall and allow your awareness to descend to your abdomen.

This will help you develop awareness of your spine,

Your posture and energy flow and sets in motion the energy of the microcosmic orbit which will assist you in remaining still,

Contemplative,

Alert and focused on the horror.

Just stay with this for a few moments.

If at any time during this meditation your mind wonders this is okay.

Just acknowledge this and bring it back to the breath.

Use the breath as an anchor for your awareness every time your mind wanders and then return it to the focus of the meditation.

Allow your awareness to sink naturally into your abdominal area and keep your focus on your breath going in and going out.

And now take your awareness to the top of your head,

The medicine palace or Ni Wang Gong.

Keep your attention here for a few moments and if you have second level Reiki you may if you wish visualise symbol number one here.

As you breathe in visualise or get a sense of energy streaming in through this point at the crown of the head.

You can visualise the energy as a golden or a silver stream of light if you wish.

Any visual imagery that works for you is perfectly fine.

Notice any sensations manifesting here at the crown of the head.

Go deep into those sensations and watch how they change,

How they move and how they fluctuate.

If you do not notice any sensations this is fine.

Just keep your attention there for a few moments.

Now take this energy from the crown all the way down into the lower tanden into the centre of the Hara which is the elixir field just below the navel.

Guide this energy down with your breath.

See the energy moving down and being stored in the Hara.

You may like to visualise symbol number one spiralling or flowing down to the Hara.

Again use whatever visual imagery works for you.

If at any point you feel strong sensations of energy as you guide it down just stay with that for a few moments.

Keep packing the energy into your Hara and get a sense of what this feels like.

You may use your breath to help you if you wish.

The breath is a great vehicle for moving energy.

Place your attention into your Hara,

Into the elixir field and have an awareness of any sensations there.

Really go deep into this experience and stay there for a few moments.

Can you feel any sensations in any other part of your body?

If so just stay with them for a few moments.

It is while cultivating energy from the Hara that the emptiness of non-doing brings you peace and brings you back to your source,

To your true nature.

Now move your awareness to your palms,

To the labour palace or Lao Gong and on each exhale drive the energy from your Hara up your spine and out to your palms.

Visualise symbol number one flowing to your palms via the spine from the Hara.

See it spinning and vibrating in each palm,

A ball of energy.

On each inhale energy is manifesting at the medicine palace at the crown of your head and flowing down to the Hara and on each exhale it is now flowing from the Hara to the hands.

Feel the energy manifesting at the hands.

Really go into that sensation of energy and notice how it feels,

How the energy moves and changes and fluctuates.

Stay with this for a few moments.

Let your mind settle effortlessly in the hands.

Let go of your focus on your breath and just allow it to flow to the Hara on each inhale and to the hands on each exhale.

Then allow your awareness to rest in your palms.

Remember if your mind wanders simply notice this and bring it back to your breath and then to the focus.

Be aware of any sensations throughout your body.

Notice the way the energy moves and manifests at our three points,

The crown of the head,

The Hara and the palms of the hands.

If you are using this meditation during a treatment you may like to cycle through it several times or you may wish to extend the meditation to last the whole length of your treatment.

When you are ready to finish gently bring your awareness back to your breath for a few moments.

Expand your awareness back out into the room that you are in.

Feel your connection to the earth through your feet and in your own time you may open your eyes and end the meditation.
