This meditative reflection offers one approach to our inner difficulties, shadow self, insecurities, doubts, and fears. There are times in life when we are simply not able to "think positive" or "change our mindset." Instead, when working with what some might term as negative thoughts or emotions we are being invited to hold them gently. This practice will help you tend to the moment-to-moment sensations around you and within you.

The negativity that we suppress,

It's all energy coming through us.

In our culture sometimes we really don't know how to be with anger and fear and discouragement.

One of the reasons why we are so afraid of our darkness is the fear that it will overwhelm us,

That it will overtake us,

That we will do something rash,

Hasty,

That will be out of control.

And we're trying so hard to control the darkness.

I don't think darkness wants to be controlled.

I think speaking of what's inside of us doesn't want to be controlled,

It simply wants to be heard,

It wants to be loved.

How do we work with that when we don't want it to be there?

Again it's just being okay with it there and listening to it.

I'd like to offer an invitation to sit with the darkness,

To sit with the struggle that is in this present moment.

One of the first steps is to not judge it anymore.

This is something that you will have to do,

It's not something that anyone else can do for you,

But the faster you're willing to let go and to surrender to the process of healing,

The faster you can often move things through.

So for me,

When I notice that I'm in this churning of craziness inside of me,

Anxiety,

Whatever it is,

I first look and then listen and then feel.

It's good if you just stop moving for a moment and look around.

Connect back up to the present moment of what is actually happening in your present reality,

Not what has happened,

No matter how recent.

You know,

15 minutes ago,

10 minutes ago,

5 minutes ago,

1 minute ago,

Or 10 hours ago,

Or 10 days ago,

The idea is to sit in the present moment and pause trying to plan and figure out what the future is going to be and pull away from or back off of the waterfall of thoughts,

The stressful,

Anxious thoughts,

The depressed thoughts.

Anytime your mind wants to go back,

Your emotions are coming through,

You know,

Strongly,

And your mind is really wants to fix things,

This is where you have the power to say,

Hold on,

I'm taking a moment simply to look and that's all that's required of me right now,

Is to look around this space,

This room,

And notice.

Then the next practice is to hear,

To listen,

And just notice different sounds,

Close sounds,

Far sounds,

Just hear it.

And then,

This is a perfect gateway to go into the body,

Feel the sensations in the body,

You know,

Notice the air coming in and going out of the body,

Notice where there's a lot of tension and tightness,

See if you can become willing,

Willing to hold a space for that darkness,

Instead of resisting it,

Or trying to figure out how to get rid of it,

You're witnessing this happening,

And so you're getting behind the waterfall now,

And standing in stillness,

Part of the process of getting through it,

Then,

Is accepting what's coming up inside of you,

You're shining light to the shadow parts of yourself that you've been unwilling to see,

And see if you can learn from it,

See if there is a message.

So I hope that this offering today is beneficial to you in some way,
