So as meditators,
Perhaps we have nurtured a faculty to watch our thoughts rather than just thinking them.
And this is not easy to watch our thoughts rather than just thinking them.
To watch anything,
To see a thing,
For it to be an object of viewing.
We come into the dual relationship of ourselves as the subject.
And in this case,
Thought as the object we're viewing,
We're watching.
Then we receive the suggestion to watch not just a thought or loop of thoughts,
To recognize not just a thought,
But also the space that makes itself known between a subsiding thought and a rising thought.
Again,
To watch anything,
To see a thing,
For it to be an object of viewing.
We come into a dual relationship of ourselves as the subject.
And now in this case,
Space.
The space that makes itself known between thoughts as the object of our viewing.
In effect,
We separate ourselves from space itself.
We separate ourselves from the experience of ourselves as the field of spaciousness.
We separate ourselves from the experience of ourselves as the expanse of spaciousness.
Find a comfortable seat.
Exhale all the air out.
Inhale the breath.
Ooooooo.
Ooooooo.
Ooooooo.
Make any final adjustments in your seat.
And then invite the body to be still.
Allow your attention to move inward,
To latch on to the breath.
Allowing the breath to carry your attention inward.
Meeting the breath at the opening of the nostrils.
Allowing your attention to open to the movement of the breath in and out of the nostrils.
And as the breath travels up the nasal pathways.
And as the breath travels down the nasal pathways.
Your attention travels with it.
See if you can allow yourself to become curious.
To a possible distinction that we create between ourselves and that which we watch.
Experientially,
Observe if there is a difference.
And you're just watching your breath.
Moving in and out of the nostrils.
Versus allowing yourself to enter the breath.
As much as it seemingly is entering you.
Embodying the breath.
As it travels up the nasal pathways.
To touch the frontal lobes of the brain.
As it travels down the nasal pathways.
Out through the nostrils.
As you travel up the nasal pathways.
And touching the frontal lobes of the brain.
Midbrain.
And then traveling out down the nasal pathways.
Out through the nostrils.
Up the nasal pathways.
Soaking the front of the brain.
Midbrain.
Back of the brain.
Moving into the fullness of your embodiment.
And then traveling back out down the nasal pathways.
Out through the openings of the nostrils.
Continue like this on your own.
And then traveling back out down the nasal pathways.
And then traveling back out down the nasal pathways.
As you allow the breath to infuse the brain.
Or rather,
As you allow your awareness.
To infuse the brain.
Perhaps less so with the latter.
You might start to observe.
Against this backdrop.
Thoughts surfacing.
Especially if you're watching the breath.
You'll find yourself soon enough.
Perhaps watching a loop of thoughts.
Even a familiar loop.
As much as the breath is an instrument of watching.
Continue to explore.
The possibility of inhabiting the breath.
To soften.
That opposition.
That divide.
That separation.
We create when we watch our thoughts.
We're doing our thoughts,
Something to be opposed.
Inhabit your breath.
To ease some of this opposition.
And just in that softening.
You might start to observe the space.
Not just in between thoughts.
But rather the space from which thoughts arise.
Try not to push away certain thoughts.
Neither encourage other thoughts.
Good thoughts,
Bad thoughts.
Elevated thoughts.
Noble thoughts.
Less noble thoughts.
Rather,
Observe.
Space not just.
As an interval between thoughts.
Space not just as a cessation of thought.
But the very backdrop.
The very source.
The expanse of consciousness itself.
Rather than trying to stop thinking.
Rather than focusing on the particular space of one thought or loop of thoughts.
Come into the expanse.
Of consciousness.
Yourself as consciousness.
The field of spaciousness.
The backdrop.
Of all experience.
The substratum of all thoughts.
Allow yourself to fall into this expanse.
Taking rest here.
Drop all language,
All words.
