Within each us is an inner child. A potent connection to unconditional love, joy, and curiosity. In psychoanalytic terms this is the part of our subconscious that collects core beliefs, messages, and hopes from our childhood. In this meditation we cultivate the skill of reparenting; this is the act of giving yourself what you didn’t receive as a child. When we heal from childhood traumas we deepen our capacity for self-love.

All of us have an inner child.

It's the part of our subconscious that holds the beliefs,

Dreams,

And hopes for the future.

Often times throughout childhood,

We pick up on things that we might not be able to fully process as a child.

So as an adult,

We turn to our inner child to heal the things that we haven't resolved from,

When we can heal our inner child,

We are able to meet our own needs to nurture ourselves unconditionally.

Let's take a moment here to close our eyes,

Get comfortable,

Give your body permission to relax.

You can sit down or lay down whatever is most comfortable for you.

Allow yourself to become present,

To really feel your body as it makes contact with the chair or the bed.

Allow your body to just melt into this space,

Clearing your mind and bringing your awareness now to the breath.

Breathing in and breathing out,

Allow your natural breath to come through.

Feel the inhale and the exhale through the rise and fall of the chest or the air from the nostrils and out the mouth.

Every time you inhale,

Imagine that your body is filled with light and openness.

And as you exhale,

Imagine that you are letting go of everything that is old and heavy.

Letting go of anything you need to do later.

Every time you exhale,

Feel your body soften and melt into this space.

At your next breath,

I invite you to open your imagination,

Still breathing in and out.

You imagine in your mind's eye,

Your inner child,

The part of you that is always listening,

Always youthful.

Really imagine yourself as a child.

See your face,

Your smile,

Your eyes.

And maybe you might greet this part of you with a kind smile in return.

And as you smile,

Feel the lightness in your body.

Feel the openness coming from the child,

See the curiosity in your own eyes.

Knowing to breathe in this receptivity,

This lightness of being with your child.

Memories might even come up of you at this age,

Warm memories,

Memories that bring joy.

Really sense into this experience of your child self,

Feel the essence of this youthful part of you.

Maybe you remember what you're wearing on this particular day,

In this particular moment,

How your hair looks.

Observe your expression,

The way you hold yourself together.

And gently look at yourself with curiosity and compassion.

Compassion even for the hard and challenging things your inner child may have had to go through.

Perhaps a time where you felt a sense of sadness or grief.

See the expression on your child's face and hold a space of calm,

Compassion for this child that is always a part of you.

Perhaps the memories,

The thoughts,

I'm not enough or I am bad come up during this time.

See if you can be there for your inner child.

You might imagine taking their hand,

Offering them an embrace.

Feel the warmth and tenderness in this gesture of turning towards the suffering.

Feel the lightness that you start to breathe in a sense of healing,

A sense of compassion for this memory.

See how the expression on this child's face changes,

Softens.

Allow yourself to be still in this moment,

Feeling the peacefulness that comes from turning towards the suffering and allowing your adult self to guide this part of you.

Going to breathe in the light and breathe out any of the heaviness.

Feel the melting in your entire body as you soften your shoulders,

Bringing back the smile to your face.

Notice your breathing as it becomes calm and soft and slow.

Now you might imagine a vast green field where you and your inner child are looking up at the sky.

Feel the sun beaming down on the both of you,

Looking up at the bright blue sky,

Puffy white clouds.

Feel the soft breeze in the air and turn to your child.

Seeing the expression on their face and offering them some kind words.

Feel them from your heart,

Whatever it is that you feel that they need.

Darling,

I care about your suffering.

I am here for you no matter what.

I will never give up on you.

I love you.

You might feel that sense of love coming from your marked space,

Really tapping into those words of wisdom that you can offer this part of you.

And let the seed plant in your heart and know that your inner child will always be with you and let the child know that you will always be with them.

And as you turn to look at them for one last time,

Offer them perhaps a loving embrace.

Know that you can always take this energy with you,

This curiosity,

This unconditional love with you throughout your days.

When you're ready,

Gently open your eyes and take in the light of the room.

Wow… that was the kindest clearest and most succinct explanation of why working with loving our inner child is so important, that I have ever heard. And the meditation was very beautiful.
