A New Relationship With Money
by Toby Gant
Money doesn't have to be good or bad. It is simply a means for energy to flow and transact. This meditation will help you understand your major mental hurdles around money and help you chart a new course for a positive relationship with it. I highly recommend the writing exercise at the end to see a real and powerful change in the way you relate to money.

Today we are going to talk about and meditate on money.
This is a topic that I am currently working with,
Learning about,
Getting more comfortable with in my own life.
Now for those of us on a spiritual path,
We often have judgments about money.
Perhaps we might think of money as not spiritual or even anti-spiritual.
Perhaps we think focusing on money can be a distraction from an empowered uplifted life.
But in doing some pondering and reflecting lately,
I realized that money has a lot of parallels with the element of water.
Water is a vessel that can move energy.
Water is an element that can sustain life.
The water is an element that can bring us a lot of fun and enjoyment,
Like swimming in the ocean waves,
Or riding an inner tube along a flowing river,
Really utilizing it to be moved with the energy.
Money has got some similarities.
It is a vessel that can carry energy as well.
And money in and of itself doesn't have to be good,
Doesn't have to be bad.
It can just be a way for transacting and moving energy from one place to another.
Now if we go back to water,
Under rare and unusual circumstances,
Water can be very dangerous and destructive.
And there are people who have had unpleasant experiences with water before.
And in their minds,
They may hold some judgments or fear around water.
But others,
And most people,
Find water quite enjoyable,
Pleasant to think about,
Pleasant to be in,
Around,
Or near.
Similar to money.
Some of us have had traumatic experiences around money,
Perhaps lack,
Or we've become obsessed with it in the past,
Or known people who were obsessed with it.
There's all kinds of different ways that many of us,
I dare say more of us,
Have had negative experiences around the concept of money than water.
But those negative experiences may have tainted the way we think of money.
And I want to offer a short meditation that will help you get clear on what some of those judgments might be around money,
Some of those limiting thoughts and beliefs around money.
And once we are clear on what those judgments and limiting thoughts are,
We can know what our hurdles are,
And know how to transcend those hurdles.
Move beyond.
Get comfortable with the concepts of money and even prosperity.
So with that in mind,
I invite you to get comfortable for a short meditation.
Take a deep breath as you stretch the arms overhead,
Reach the spine nice and long,
Fingertips towards the sky.
And as you exhale,
Sigh out the mouth,
Keeping the spine long,
Bringing hands and arms down to your side.
Take another inhale as you shrug shoulders up towards the ears.
And exhale,
Let the shoulder blades retract behind the back a little bit more,
Opening up the heart,
The lungs,
The ribcage,
Keeping the chin parallel with the floor,
Closing your eyes.
And this posture opens us up more,
Opens us up in our minds,
Our hearts,
And even opens us to the possibility of receiving more abundance.
The first thing I want to do is just simply imagine some flowing water,
Gentle flowing water.
Perhaps some gentle waves,
The ocean lapping up against the shore and then retracting back to sea.
Perhaps a flowing river that you can ride an inner tube on,
Flowing on that current of energy that the water carries.
For those who are less visual,
Perhaps imagine the feeling of being in gently flowing water and feeling that movement of the water.
For most of us,
This is a pleasant thought.
For some,
It might not be,
If there has been a negative history with water.
But in general,
We can logically understand that water is neither good nor bad in and of itself.
It really depends on how it's used or the circumstances that are moving the element of water.
And now I invite you to keep that in mind as we think about money.
Money allows the energy of abundance to flow.
When that energy is not flowing,
It can feel like lack.
It can feel,
At times,
It can bring up fear.
It can bring up panic.
But when it's flowing and abundant,
It can feel pleasant,
Enjoyable.
Most of us have experienced ebbs and flows of money in our lives.
But I'd like to look at some of our deeply held beliefs and thought patterns,
Even subconscious ways of relating to money.
The first thing I invite you to do in deep reflection is check in with yourself.
Ask yourself this question.
What are the judgments that I have around money or prosperity?
Just take a moment to sit with that question.
What are the judgments I have around money or prosperity?
And hold on to that information.
Take a deep breath with me.
And as you exhale through your nose,
You are sinking very deep within yourself,
To the realm of the subconscious,
Perhaps even to the realm of the soul.
And I invite you to ask yourself the question,
What are some of my family patterns and family beliefs around money and prosperity?
What are some of my family patterns and family beliefs around money and prosperity?
And sit with that just for a moment.
And as we reflect on some of those familial thoughts,
Beliefs,
And patterns around money,
I invite you to ask yourself,
Am I allowing any of my judgments around money or familial patterns and beliefs around money to negatively impact my relationship with money?
Am I allowing any of the family stuff around money or judgments I have around money and prosperity to negatively impact my relationship with money?
Then I want you to imagine,
Once again,
Pleasantly flowing water,
Gentle ocean waves.
If you're comfortable with water,
Perhaps floating on an inner tube down a lazy river,
Something pleasant around moving or flowing water.
How we can ride the currents of moving water,
Play in those currents,
Have fun with it for most of us.
And then in seeing water and money in similar ways,
Imagine what it would be like to be in a flowing current of money.
Open to it,
Free of judgment about it,
Perhaps even thinking,
Oh,
This money could allow me to do some things that are fun and enjoyable.
And when you have finished,
I invite you to open your eyes.
There's one last step in this exercise that's really going to help you to go beyond just having deeper self-awareness.
I invite you to write a letter to money for the concept of money.
Dear money,
I invite you to elaborate on some of the insights you had about yourself,
Such as judgments you might have around the concept of money or around prosperity.
Judgments of people who have either had money or been focused on money.
A conversation with money in this letter about your family patterns related to money,
Familial beliefs around money.
And towards the end of this letter,
It does not have to be a long letter at all,
But towards the end,
I invite you to have a conversation with money around a new type of relationship.
A relationship where the judgments have been released.
A relationship where past traumas are no longer blamed on money or the concept of prosperity.
Establishing in this conversation with money,
A relationship that is open.
That is even open to the concept of fun that can come through the flow of money.
Set up a new relationship with money through this letter you write to money.
I want to thank you for joining me in this.
I do hope that you do the writing exercise and get tremendous benefit out of it.
And that it opens you to a totally new and fun and enjoyable,
Comfortable relationship with money and prosperity.
I look forward to next time.
