Here in the United States and in many places in Latin America and Europe,
Mother's Day is approaching and this can bring up so much for people.
Maybe you have a strong and healthy relationship to your mom,
Maybe she is missing from your life,
Or maybe she's around but is toxic and harmful.
Instead of focusing on a real figure in your life,
This Mother's Day,
Let's develop a relationship to your ideal mother figure,
The caretaking qualities that are alive within you.
Get comfortable,
Get heavy,
Get quiet,
Watch the air move in and out of your lungs,
Feel the length of your spine,
And you can imagine a silvery strand of light running along the left side of your spine.
If it feels comfortable,
You can try blocking your right nostril and just breathing through your left nostril for a few rounds.
The left nostril and the left channel of the spine are associated with feminine energy,
Moonlight,
Cooling sensations,
And emotional flow.
While you are inviting this feminine energy through your breathing and through your spine,
You can imagine roots growing out of your spine or out of your feet,
Roots winding their way out and down,
Wrapping around you as if you were an ancient sturdy tree,
Seeing your strong trunk with thick roots anchoring into the ground,
Sinking your roots deeper now,
Feeling how alive the soil is,
How interconnected all beings are who share our Mother Earth,
Knowing that you are always supported and held by our planet and her boundless creative energy,
Allowing this creative force to wrap around you,
Remembering all the ways that we are nurtured and sustained by this Mother,
Gaya,
Tachamama,
Mother Nature,
The food that we eat,
The water we drink,
The sun that lights our day,
The animals that fill the land.
She is always creating,
She is always loving,
And you are made of the same atoms as all of this.
You are creation itself.
Noticing how this feels.
Where do you feel the strength of your roots?
What does it feel like to be an expression of pure creativity?
Scanning your body for sensations,
Temperature changes,
Images,
Words.
What does it feel like inside your body when you are loved unconditionally?
Now imagine that this love takes shape,
That it is able to hold you.
You can hold a pillow or wrap your arms around yourself if that feels right.
Just opening to what this form might look like.
Allowing her to support your weight.
Allowing her to soothe you.
Hearing her whisper,
I love you.
You are perfect.
You are everything I ever hoped for.
Feeling how those words land on your skin.
Where they nest.
Spending a moment with this ideal mother.
Taking in however she presents herself to you.
Listening for anything she wants to tell you.
And allowing her to settle into your body somewhere.
Where will you find her the next time you need care or support?
How will you know she is there with you?
What signals are present?
When you've tucked your inner mama into place,
Gently bring your awareness back to the present moment.
Wiggle your fingers and toes,
Slowly allow yourself to come back.
Take one final breath in,
And as you exhale,
Slowly blink open your eyes.
Remember that you can reconnect with your inner mother anytime you need care or support.
Nurturing.
