Dear soul,
What is it you wish to receive that does not already reside within you?
The meaning of to receive is rooted in the Latin word recapio,
Meaning to take back or regain what has been lost.
To receive then is to reclaim something that has been forgotten or momentarily lost.
And you do not need to be a certain way or attain a certain state of mind in order to remember what is already yours.
Worthiness is inborn and traced back to within the seed that first gave you life.
You received life without a belief that your body was unworthy of holding it.
In fact,
Your body knew that life belonged within it.
To receive is to remember that you are this container created with the capacity to bear an entire universe within itself.
To receive is an invitation to play with this universe again,
As you once did as a child when you heard trees whisper out spells through their eaves and when you pocketed ordinary pebbles as treasured keepsakes.
There have been years of wonder and innocence and an ability to insatiably receive within you.
Although life has created layers and weight,
It is merely dusted over or can still receive an act of love and turn it into an embodiment or receive an offering of beauty and recognize it as belonging within you.
There is not an exchange made in being able to receive,
But there is an alchemy to it.
Everything comes to you that belongs to you,
But first you must remember your capacity to receive it.
This ability begins by remembering that the body receives the breath without believing it is unworthy of receiving life.
Just as the flower receives the sunlight without shame for its need to be nourished,
And as the moon receives her luminous face without feeling it undeserved because she still holds a piece of her darkness away from the light.
Everything is attunement between something external and what is most valuable within you.
It is an ability to be fed something of real substance that you are then able to offer with the fullness of your heart to others.
If you are constantly at odds with yourself and your ability to receive,
You will always be asking for more but never able to open your palms out and hold it.
Never being able to open the door to what is being delivered because your hands are so full of fear and doubt.
Holding on to false narratives clenched your fists closed,
These are the stories that limit the natural conversation between you and your life and there cannot be a partnership with the universe when one side cannot receive.
Unworthiness is a deeply biased narrative based on an idea of an exchange.
Behind the inability to receive lies the belief that you are not deserving or that you need to bargain with your value in order to receive something often lesser than your worth.
But it is not an exchange,
It is a reclaim of what you once knew with your whole and tender heart.
There are three steps you can use to practice receiving.
Whether it's receiving love,
Freedom,
Guidance or simply more joy in your everyday life.
Use the words presence,
Recognize and embody as a daily art of learning how to receive again.
Only through presence,
The first step,
Are you able to receive because that is the moment you are truly free from belief and bygone.
It is the only state of being that acts as an open doorway to the universe around you.
From a place of presence,
You are then able to open yourself up to what is being offered in front of you.
When you are both present and aware of what is here,
You are able to recognize the second step that what you see before you is a part of you.
And when it is a part of you,
It becomes an embodiment,
A reclamation,
The third step and then it becomes a part of the world around you and an offering for all to benefit from.
Only when you are able to receive can you become the medium to that which heals the world.
Let's try this in a meditation practice where we will go through the three steps of presence,
Realize and embody with both closed and open eyes,
Inviting ourselves into a partnership with the universe once again.
I'd like you to close your eyes now and sit comfortably.
Begin to settle slowly and intentionally into the body,
The container to which the whole universe resides in.
Breathe into the body and notice any areas of tightness.
These areas are those that are in conflict with the natural and rested state of the body.
Breathe and unhinge your shoulders.
Breathe and melt the belly.
Breathe and unzip the jaw.
Breathe and uncoil the spine.
Breathe and open the heart.
Notice how the body receives the breath naturally and with this breath,
Life is.
Breathe without forcing the breath and simply notice its crest and fall from a distance.
The lungs unconditionally giving.
The body unconditionally receiving.
Both existing because of each other.
And gratitude,
The expression of life itself.
We begin the three steps with presence.
In a moment I will ask you to open your eyes with mindful awareness.
I'd like you to scan the room you are sitting in and locate something seemingly mundane and ordinary.
But that holds a sense of deep beauty in its familiarity.
It may be a fragment of light through the window or the way a flame flickers from a candle.
A pattern or texture upon the floor,
Anything that catches the attention of your heart.
You may open your eyes now and scan the room staying as much as you can in your meditative state of awareness.
Find your offering of simple beauty and shift your body to face it if you need to.
Keep breathing into the body,
Connecting with your presence and observe the beauty of your object in its simplicity.
Try and become as present to it as possible,
Focusing on it just as it is.
Bring back to your breath whenever the mind inevitably wanders away.
The second step is to recognize what you are seeing as an expression of yourself.
You recognize this beauty as your own because you are the one seeing it.
You cannot locate this beauty,
This love,
This gratitude,
This wonder without already knowing what it is to look for.
This object is offering you a reminder of who you are and what you are capable of receiving when you are present to it.
In recognizing yourself in the everyday magic of life,
You allow fear,
Doubt and shame to fall away and be replaced by a deeper knowing that as it is,
So you are.
Keep your eyes focused on your object and open your palms now.
Rest them on your knees.
Allow what you are holding onto to fall away so you are able to receive the fullness of this beauty.
Allow whatever doubt and unworthiness to trickle through your fingers like sand.
Allow the stories,
The narratives that are etched on your lifelines to fade until your palms are clean and light.
Allow the beauty of what you are looking at now to be received into your hands.
Take a few deep breaths,
Inviting this pure energy into your hands with every inhale.
Draw it closer and closer until it sits in your palms like two small soft birds.
Begin to close your eyes again.
You have received an offering of truth that now lies within your palms.
Pull your hands up over your chest and cross them over your heart.
This final step is the art of embodying what you have been offered.
Pull what you have received inwards into the body.
Use the breath to inhale the goodness,
The light,
The beauty,
The simplicity,
The magic and allow the body to receive it just as it receives the breath.
You have been able to recognize that the beauty that exists in the world can only exist because it is of you too.
When you wish to be able to receive love,
Become present to the love that exists within you by recognizing it within the world.
Let the world become a mirror of the goodness and splendor that resides within your heart.
Embody it by reclaiming it as yours and offer it forward as if completing a full circle.
Take a few final and solidifying deep breaths.
The cyclical nature of life moves within you too.
Lungs giving,
Body receiving.
Life an expression of this gratitude.
You may open your eyes now.
Know that this practice of presence,
Recognize and embody can be done whenever you feel like the false narrative of unworthiness,
Doubt or shame open up within you.
You can even intentionally take this practice with you to watch a sunrise or when you are with your child or a loved one.
Open up your presence.
Recognize their magnificence as residing within you too and embody it by opening your palms and releasing what is stopping you from receiving it fully.
We end this practice today with a short poem that can help you solidify an understanding of what we have learned today.
To receive is to co-create,
To be in conversation with life,
To become the brave bearer of a new narrative that nourishes your worth and to return home what belongs.
It is the moment in which the universe allows herself to be vulnerable and unfold her splendor at your feet and you accept it as your own,
A peace and reflection of yourself.
To feel unworthy is to be always at odds with your body,
Your nature and your truth.
For the one who cannot receive cannot recognize themself as the one who is offering the wisdom but to open your chest and expose your heart to the clear and glassy skies is to allow the universe to see her own reflection in all the beauty and wonder that is you.
Thank you for the journey we have taken today.
A journal prompt you might like to take with you is the question,
What is my capacity to receive and how has it affected my life,
My partnerships and my ability to give to others?
Thank you to all who share and comment on these meditations.
Your support breathes life into this work,
So thank you.
