3. Significance The need for significance is a powerful human drive, reflecting our desire to feel valued, unique, and important. Understanding this need within ourselves is crucial for fostering self-esteem and purpose. It motivates us to achieve, contribute, and make our mark on the world. In relationships, acknowledging each other's need for significance strengthens emotional connections. It involves recognizing and appreciating each other's contributions and qualities, making each person feel seen and valued. When individuals feel significant, they are more likely to invest in the relationship, leading to a deeper, more fulfilling partnership where both partners feel acknowledged and important.

Welcome everybody,

Make yourselves at home.

My name is Seth Monk,

Thank you for coming tonight.

I have been doing a series,

The series is on the six human needs.

Six human needs are kind of the basis of a lot of our behaviors,

Basis of a lot of our feelings as well,

Thoughts.

The six needs are certainty,

Uncertainty,

Significance,

Connection,

Growth,

And contribution.

So as we start to examine these six human needs,

We can start to see for ourselves which one is more prominent for us individually.

Are we somebody that's constantly searching for safety,

For something that feels stable?

Are we someone who's constantly looking for newness and adventure?

Are we someone who's constantly looking for some sort of validation or sense that we belong?

Are we someone who's constantly searching for connection to feel not alone?

Are we someone who's constantly searching to grow and to evolve and to become new?

Or are we someone who's really focused on how can I serve,

What can I give,

What can I do?

So today the theme is significance,

This is the third of the human needs.

Next week is connection and it's on Valentine's Day so that's perfect.

So the need of significance is an interesting one because the wish to feel significant,

The wish to feel important,

Like we matter.

If you trace the origins of that back,

You could see it goes all the way back in the tribal days where we relied on the tribe,

We relied on the community.

We needed to feel that strong sense of our value and our worth and our belonging because we depended on that tribe to live.

We were excommunicated from our tribes,

We would probably die out there alone.

So it's really built into us to need to feel like we belong,

Need to feel like we matter,

Like we're wanted,

It gives us a feeling of safety.

That also for some people translates into feeling loved,

Feeling seen,

Feeling like they're enough.

Significance like all of the needs also has what I call the shadow side of it.

If we are too much focused on significance of being important,

Mattering,

Being meaningful,

We could create a reality in a world that is very self-centered,

That things revolve around us,

That as we're constantly searching for this validation for ourselves,

We are actually pushing other people away.

We're actually not contributing to them,

We're not connecting.

The other need from significance is connection.

Significance is me,

Me,

Me,

Connection is we,

We,

We.

So as we're focused on ourselves too much,

It can create a bit of a black hole situation where we so desperately crave this feeling of being seen,

Of mattering,

Of being liked and wanted,

And by wanting that so much and by being so afraid or wounded that we're not getting it,

We thereby actually continue the cycle by almost creating an energy vacuum around ourselves,

Trying to get other people's attention.

What's important to know for significance is that you are already super important,

You are significant.

We never walk around nature and see a tree in the forest or a lizard running across the ground and think,

Oh,

That one doesn't matter.

We never see a snowflake and think,

Oh,

That one's kind of irrelevant.

You know,

Everything that we experience is a part of the whole,

It all belongs.

It's all deeply woven into this fabric of creation that even an apple tree as it grows,

It puts apples in exact spots that when those apples drop,

They can begin to feed nutrients into the soil in specific areas under the tree where it's necessary.

That every little thing in nature is specifically placed,

Even if it seems random to us.

We are all very significant,

We all matter to those around us,

We matter to the greater context of things,

And if you're honest,

You matter to yourself,

And that is also enough.

So tonight's journey is going to revolve around connecting into that sense of significance that we already possess,

Not needing to obsessively try to be sourcing that for the outside,

Exhausting ourselves and those around us.

There's an opportunity here to really create that sense of meaning within ourselves,

And that need can be satiated and met all the time as it is.

So I invite you all to lay down or get into a comfortable seated position.

I'm going to dim the lights,

The journey from here is a relaxing one.

So as we get into comfortable positions,

When we feel ready,

We'll close our eyes,

We begin by taking a few breaths in through the nose,

Down into the belly,

And out through the mouth.

We allow ourselves to relax,

To unwind,

To soften,

Turning the mind,

The attention inwards,

Feeling the body as it's breathing,

As we begin to soften,

Softening the heart,

The head,

The belly,

Down into the roots,

Into the tailbone,

Down the legs and feet,

To the tips of your toes,

And begin expanding into the space around us.

This is your time to fully let go,

Connect with the space around you,

See if you can feel this room,

And see if you can feel out beyond this room,

See how far you can travel outwards into space,

Until you feel the convergence point,

The space beyond space,

Everything in this entire universe,

It's exactly where it needs to be,

The movement of every atom since the beginning of time has led to this exact moment,

And everything before us is part of an infinite story that stretches forever in both directions,

Breathing into that space,

Everything is exactly where it needs to be,

Including you,

Your life began long before you were even born,

Your life will continue far beyond the time that you pass away,

Softening to the point of dissolving,

Releasing boundaries,

Barriers,

We are all the waves upon one sea,

A flower only exists because there is a sun,

And because there is rain,

And because there is earth,

Because there is air,

With no sun,

There is no flower,

No rain,

There is no flower,

With no sun,

There are no clouds,

And there would be no rain,

With no sun,

There would be no rain,

Without the earth,

There would be nothing for the rain to fall on,

No earth,

No rain,

All things exist together,

Everything in your life is the way it is because you are here,

You are a part of the tapestry,

Part of the spider web,

A star in the sky,

Where every star matters,

And all of the stars together,

All shining at once,

Is what creates the beauty,

What if we were all allowed to be significant together,

What if you matter,

Because everything matters,

And because everything matters,

You matter,

Resting,

Softening,

Dissolving deeper,

What a relief to release the need to be something more than this.

Taking a deep breath,

Slowly beginning to return to your body.
