Transcript
Welcome.
Did you know that your mind is like an empty space where whatever you put into it is what you experience?
Like a garden,
Whatever seeds you plant,
Meaning whatever intentions,
Whatever thoughts you plant in the garden of your mind will eventually grow into the fruit of your life.
This is why we hear things like,
Where focus goes,
Energy flows,
Or what we think about we become.
Because with each thought,
With each feeling,
We are directing our life.
Tony Robbins says,
The quality of your life is the quality of your emotions.
And the thoughts that we think ignite or charge our emotional experiences.
For example,
If I focus on the thought,
I feel so tired,
I feel so tired.
What do you think I'm going to feel?
All of my focus is going into that experience of being tired.
Even if I have a moment where I feel some energy or some vibrancy,
My awareness is so honed in to this experience of tiredness that that is what I'm going to notice.
Many of us have a strong habit of thinking about the things that we don't want or that we don't like.
But again,
The mind,
Specifically the subconscious mind,
Doesn't discern positives or negatives.
It literally doesn't process words such as not,
Don't,
Or won't.
This means that if I focus on the thought,
I really don't want to feel sad anymore.
The mind doesn't process the word don't.
It just hears,
I want to feel sad.
And that is where the focus and the intention is going.
Awareness is the first step to any transformation or any change in our lives.
Without awareness,
How would we ever know that we want something to be different?
We wouldn't,
We would just be inside of that experience.
So when we become aware that we are in these thinking habits of what we don't want,
What we don't like,
The things that are occurring that we wish were different,
We have an opportunity in that moment of awareness to shift our focus.
This likely won't feel very easy.
But the more we practice consciously thinking,
Meaning rather than allowing old patterns and habits to think for us,
We choose our thoughts.
We choose where our focus is going.
The more we practice this,
The more we feel the uplifted feelings that come from thinking about what is working,
What we do enjoy,
What we do want more of.
So let's take a few moments to practice this together.
I invite you to close the eyes,
Feel the hips relaxing down.
Inhale,
Feel the belly and the chest expand.
Exhale,
Feel the shoulders begin to relax.
Feel the crown of the head lengthening the spine up toward the sky so there is an alertness in the body.
Roll the shoulders back a couple of times,
Creating space across the chest,
The collarbone.
Take a deep breath into the heart center.
Exhale through the mouth.
Take a deep,
Full breath in.
Exhale through the mouth.
One more breath like this.
Breathe naturally.
Become aware of different sensations in the body without any judgment,
Without needing to adjust your position.
Really feel the body.
Bring your awareness to an area where there is a strong sense of tension.
Begin to breathe into that feeling inside without trying to make it go away or make it different.
Breathe into this area with a sense of acceptance,
Even if just for these next few moments,
Allowing this experience to be just as it is.
Relax.
Start to become aware of the mind.
Without trying to control the thoughts,
Notice what is naturally arising.
Are there any thoughts expressing what you don't like,
What you wish was different,
What you feel is missing from your life?
Remember the subconscious mind doesn't process words such as not,
Don't,
Can't,
Won't.
So the more that you focus on this type of thinking,
The more you are diving into the experience of these feelings that you're actually trying to get away from.
Use one of these types of thoughts to focus on.
And for the sake of experiment,
Start to notice how your body feels when you think about this thought.
Do you start to feel more contracted,
Heavy,
Tired?
Maybe you start to feel emotions such as anger,
Sadness,
Or fear more strongly.
This is the power of your mind,
The power of your focus.
So let's take a really deep breath in,
Feel as if you are filling the entire body with breath.
And then exhale through the mouth with a sigh.
Now that you're aware of this thought,
And maybe of how it makes you feel inside,
Let's consciously engage in shifting our focus and our experience.
The first step to have a powerful shift is changing the physiology,
Changing the body.
So in this moment,
I invite you to begin to move your body and move your body in ways that you don't normally.
Maybe you start to shake your hands or your shoulders,
Start to breathe more deeply.
If you're sitting down,
Maybe you'd even like to stand up,
Maybe you'd like to jump around for a moment,
Really give your body a total reset.
This is also how we're going to reset the brain,
You could say.
Take a stance in your posture that feels more enlivened,
More confident.
And now with this shift in the body,
Let us shift the focus of the mind.
Consciously choose a thought that you want to have.
For example,
Maybe the thought that you keep having is,
I don't want to feel sad anymore.
So think about what it is that you do want,
Joy,
Peace,
Freedom.
And then choose a thought that expresses that.
You can even create an intention statement that speaks what you're wanting as if it is already happening,
An affirmation.
I am joyful,
I am peaceful.
Or maybe you shift your thoughts to a thought of gratitude.
Is there something you could feel grateful for right now?
Shift your focus to something that uplifts you,
Inspires you,
Or allows you to feel more content in the moment.
And now become aware of how you express this in your life.
Coming back to the thought of I feel sad as an example,
Are you always telling people how you are sad or how things never go the way you want them to in your life?
Or to shift how it is that you speak about these experiences?
Again it's likely that this process will feel uncomfortable,
Awkward,
Or even challenging.
Think about how long you've been living with this thought or thoughts that are similar.
Many of us have been in these habits of thinking for decades.
So it's going to take more than practicing this once or twice or even ten times for it to feel more natural.
Start to shift how it is that you speak and think about these experiences.
And pay attention,
How you think about these experiences.
Let's begin to move the body and again move the body in ways that seem abnormal for you.
Take the body,
Maybe you stand up and sit down again if that's available for your body.
Introducing this type of movement when we practice something new or when we are wanting to create a new experience helps to solidify this new pathway in the brain which is the beginning of forming a new habit.
Let's take a deep full breath in together.
Exhale through the mouth and feel yourself beginning to settle,
You can relax movement in the body.
We open the eyes and again bring to mind this new thought that you are choosing to focus on.
A thought that uplifts you,
A thought that is moving towards that which you are wanting rather than focusing on what you don't want.
I invite you to continue practicing awareness of the mind and then consciously choosing to focus on that which you are wanting.
There's no need to judge or feel guilty if you think these thoughts of what you don't want,
Again these are patterns that are decades old for most of us.
Here have compassion for yourself and maybe even connect with a sense of inspiration knowing that the more you practice consciously choosing your thoughts,
Focusing on that which you are wanting,
The more you will inevitably experience the fulfillment,
The richness of having that which you are wanting in your life.

Great insight, now I'm choosing a reframe on some negstive sentences that were replaying constantly. Words like diet, tired, sober have LACK as the underpinning meaning, so now I an see i need to find positive affirming, abundant ones instead. Very useful meditation/talk. Thank you.

Thank you. This is an excellent explanation of this concept. I actually teach it often to small groups and as I work on a one to one basis with people who need some respite in my home. However, it is often helpful to have a back up resource, such as this, put in someone elseβs words, to support what Iβm teaching. This is not to say that I donβt have to be alert to my own thinking processes, and fortunately, because I live alone I speak my thoughts out loud a lot, where it is much easier to catch when they are βoffβ.
