To know ourselves as a whole doesn't require any addition, but the subtracting away of all the limiting beliefs that obscure our vision. In this meditation, we will be guided to follow the thread of longing back from the external world to its primordial origin: the whole, worthy and vital Self at our core. This offering was inspired by the poetry of Charles Bukowski, a satsang entitled the 'Red Thread of Desire' by Adyashanti, and my own lifelong desire to know myself as a whole.

I invite you to find a comfortable position,

One which allows your body to fully relax and let go.

Allow your shoulders to drop and melt.

Allow your breathing to become fluid and easy.

Reminding yourself that meditation isn't about trying to create a particular state,

But a relaxing,

A letting go,

A remembering of the peace that is already here.

Allow awareness to reveal to you now your natural,

Uncontrived state.

Allow yourself to fall into this peace which surpasses all understanding.

At some point along our earthly journey,

We make a simple,

Innocent mistake.

We turn away from our innate wholeness.

We allow the thread of longing to take us out,

Far out of ourselves,

Until we start to feel an inner tug and wonder,

What would happen if I follow this thread back to its origin?

What would happen if I follow this thread all the way through to its primordial source?

I invite you to look now and see if you can locate this thread of longing somewhere in your body.

Is it in your head,

Heart,

Belly,

Or elsewhere?

Have a look now and see where you feel it most fully.

Does this thread have a color?

Does it have a texture?

How thick is it?

Is it moving or still?

Simply observe and notice everything you can about it.

And now,

Start to follow this thread back,

Back in.

From where in your body does this longing originate?

Allow this origin point,

This wordless space to open and reveal itself to you now.

Does this space have a name?

Does it have a gender?

Does it have an expiration date?

Does it care how long you've turned away from it?

If everything external was stripped away from you,

Would this space still be here?

I invite you to sink your attention deeper still into this space and simply notice what does wholeness feel like?

I invite you to hold vigil over it,

To devote your being to it,

And to observe as it delights in the light of your presence.

Allow this source to consume the thread of your longing.

Allow it to consume all your arguments of deservingness.

Allow it to consume all the ways in which you try to create,

Earn,

Or manufacture your way to wholeness.

Allow your bones,

Body,

And being to fully receive this knowing.

Allow yourself to be what you truly are.

And you might wonder,

If wholeness is so readily available,

Why do we turn away from it at all?

Because,

Like all true things,

Wholeness disrupts what is false.

It requires that we honor ourselves and remember our worth.

It requires that we stop playing small,

Stop playing victim or perpetrator,

Inferior or superior,

Or any role at all.

It requires that we stop betraying ourselves to stay true to others and start asking,

What would a life,

Informed by complete self-honoring,

Look like?

A life lived from our wholeness may alienate,

Challenge,

Or disturb us.

We may lose friends,

Family,

Or lovers.

We may lose our reputation or our sense of self.

But if we're going to try,

We might as well go all the way.

It's the only good fight there is and the only one worth winning.

When we commit ourselves to living from wholeness,

We begin to discover that life is about as kind as we allow it to be.

And the more we acknowledge what we truly are,

The kinder it becomes.

We begin to see how the true vitality and richness of our lives is directly correlated with our ability to recognize this level of wholeness.

We begin to see that we are what we long for and what we long for has always been here.

May you be well.

May you be at peace.

Namaste.
