Core Essence- Part 1
by Paula Tursi
So often in life, we find ourselves in a place of mental disarray. We find that we feel unbalanced and fearful with our sense of joy diminished. These feelings happen when we stray from our core essence. Join me as we meditate on getting to the core of who we are - returning our sense of joy and purpose.

So this morning,
Good morning,
I have maybe an interesting topic.
There are three things that tend to plague us as humans.
And the root of all of them is fear,
Anxiety,
And depression.
These are the things that we try to push away that come and get us in the middle of the night that disturb our sense of joy and peace.
And there's all kinds of manifestations of those things,
But ultimately everything stems from a sense of fear.
The fear creates anxiety and prolonged anxiety can create depression,
Along with a few other things sprinkled in the mix.
And so the question would be,
Why do they exist?
Why do I have to feel that way?
And the answer is always the same.
That I have somewhere along the line,
Forgotten who I am,
And I've lost connection with my essence,
My deeper self.
So really what each of those things are pointing to is that you have been lost along the track of life,
That something has pulled you off of your alignment.
And now what the psyche is doing for you is giving you symptoms to say,
Hey,
You've taken a wrong turn.
Take a moment,
Turn back,
Look within and find yourself.
I guarantee you a hundred percent that that is always what's going on,
Even if what we're talking about is from a chemistry point of view,
Because a lot of these things can be brought up because our hormonal balance is off.
But the answer is still always the same.
It's not that you need to look outward to figure it out,
Not that you need to read a book or talk to friends,
Or maybe even perhaps see a therapist.
These are all good things to do,
But ultimately we must always take the journey inward to figure this stuff out.
This is why we meditate,
To have that conversation with our deeper essence,
With our core self.
And so I talk so much about core essence,
Core values,
Core beliefs,
Because this is where it begins.
When I understand that about myself,
When I've bothered to take that journey inward and figure out what my core essence is.
I want to be able to name it and also name the behaviors that are associated with the thing that is at the root of who I am,
With the thing that is at the root of who I am.
When I'm really clear about that,
Then I know what I need to go back to.
I know this behavior that I am partaking in is not in alignment with my core self,
Which is why I'm feeling so anxious,
Which is why I'm feeling so impulsive,
Which is why I'm feeling so scared because I'm out of alignment with who I am.
And so your whole being is just saying,
Hey,
Hey,
Don't go too far.
Come on back the further or sorry,
The longer we ignore it,
The further we go from our alignment,
The worse the symptom gets,
Because it's just calling us.
It's not trying to hurt us.
It's just trying to beckon us back.
And we're like,
Well,
I'm not listening to that.
I'm going to keep doing this thing because there's also a strange feeling of feedback around those symptoms.
They tell us in a way,
Or they create a container that's very immediate for us.
I do this thing that is out of alignment with who I am and I get this feedback.
And some of us really need that feedback,
Not in a positive way,
But we were so used to that feedback that we think that that is normal,
That we look to that,
To understand where we are in space who we are.
And it's just a wrong direction.
It's just a wrong direction that has to be looked at,
Re understood and realize,
Oh,
That that isn't the feedback I'm really looking for,
Because when I am in full alignment,
There is this boundarylessness that I feel that sometimes can be frightening because it's so big,
Because it's so vast until we start to get used to it.
An example is when you're feeling really good,
Don't you always wait for the other shoe to drop?
Right?
When you're feeling really good,
Do you not wake up and go,
Oh my God,
What's going on here?
I feel great.
Something's wrong.
Right?
That's our brain.
That's our crazy brain saying,
I'm not used to this.
I'm used to hitting up against resistance and bad feelings and bad emotions.
Oh,
That makes me feel normal.
But is that normal?
No,
It is just something we have gotten used to.
And so through meditation,
We realize that the true safe place to be in the truth of who I am,
The enlightened place to be is in alignment with who I am in an expanded state.
Most of us are not used to this.
Most of us never get to see it modeled.
So how could we be used to it?
We're very used to seeing other people bump up against their uncomfortable feelings.
They go,
Oh yeah,
I get that.
We can complain about that together.
That feels normal.
It is not.
It is just common.
It is not normal.
And so through meditation,
We want to connect to our core self,
To our core essence,
And then start to partake in behaviors that line up with that.
It makes life so simple when I know what it is.
And when I know what the behaviors are,
Because I can so easily draw myself back to what is going to be positive,
Healthy,
And joyful.
So let us meditate.
Find that comfortable seat.
And in your heart,
Just even before we start saying,
I want joy.
I want happiness.
I want to know myself at its deepest point,
At its clearest essence.
And let that be the intention today for our meditation.
As we find our gazing point,
And let all else fall away.
It's just you and the gazing point.
And,
Of course,
We hear and feel all the distractions in the beginning,
Because we are narrowing what we're taking in.
We're not,
In quotation marks,
Multitasking in our mind.
We're creating a singular focus,
Which will ultimately bring us into the present moment,
Which is truly the expanded moment.
When we are bumping up against our thoughts,
It's the same thing as bumping up against fear and anxiety.
We're just used to it.
But really,
All that exists is the dimension of the present moment.
Waiting for your body to start to show you it is shifting.
Maybe you want to take note of the floor beneath you.
The sky above you.
These are real reference points.
The wall to your left and to your right.
You get a sense of yourself right there in the middle.
And the moment that you see something you haven't seen before,
From your gazing point,
You know,
Ah,
Here's the present moment.
I've been looking at this for a good two minutes now.
I haven't even seen that.
So now you realize you're starting to see instead of look.
Enjoying all those little shifts that are telling you you're beginning to walk in the right direction.
Beginning to walk toward yourself.
Taking your attention moment by moment off the external world.
And you can close your eyes and make that connection to yourself.
And when we do this,
We might know consciously,
But we're more apt to know this unconsciously.
That my connection is to myself.
But my experience is in the world.
My connection is to myself.
So I want to be able to experience all the joys of this wonderful planet from a point of reference of my higher self.
When I am unplugged from that,
When I am untethered to who I am,
And I quite easily get swept away with all of the distractions of the external world.
I forget who I am soon begin to feel uneasy.
So you begin to connect to the earth beneath you,
Allowing your grounding cord to draw you deep into the space beneath you.
Bringing you even further into this moment.
This is a wonderful step to connecting to your higher self.
Ground into this space and into my body.
Start to take all of my prana,
All of my energy and bring it inward.
Take it off of the distractions,
Take it off of the external world.
Very consciously bring it back to myself.
I'm aware of the space around me once again,
The seat beneath me,
The sky above.
Space on my left and on my right.
Simply a container for my body.
Being aware of my environment helps me become aware of my body.
It's another way to connect.
To feel the container of your awareness,
The container of your awareness is your body,
Is your form.
Just like the room you're in contains your body,
Your body contains your spirit or your essence,
Your awareness.
Holds your prana,
That energy that you will use to eventually turn back out and experience the world.
But not yet.
Let's further connect to our truth.
We feel that prana welling up in our belly.
The high force that will be what we use to design our day in any way we'd like.
Might be very used to our routine and that might make us feel calm.
But also remembering you have a choice to move away from that routine and design something different.
That routine makes you feel stuck and you can also change it.
We take that energy and draw it up to our third space.
This is where we get to observe our core self,
Our essence,
Meeting the world.
So that energy will leave our body.
It will be laced.
It's a perfect gift to the world.
With our individual essence.
It is nice to know what that is.
What are we presenting?
What do we believe?
What do we care about?
What do we want to align with?
Ultimately,
How do I live out my purpose?
Feel that a life that is clear about its purpose has a direct path.
There's very little doubt or confusion.
All of the prana is used to live out that path.
When we are clear about that,
It is very true that the heart begins to open.
Feel safe in knowing you have figured it out.
And joy begins to become an ordinary feeling.
Not a surprise.
I feel joy today.
I always feel joy.
And occasionally feel fear or anxiety.
Just enough so I can bring myself back to my center.
There is one thing that can have a few different forms,
But there is one thing in our life we are passionate about that creates this expanded state.
Feeling of excitement,
This feeling of joy,
This feeling of you.
What are you going to tell yourself that is today?
Not from your brain,
But coming up in the truth of the heart.
It shows up differently in a multitude of activities,
But the essence is typically always the same.
What is that for you?
As you feel ready and in your own time,
Go ahead and take that seat right in the center of your brain.
Repeat to the Buddha allowing everything else to completely dissolve because ultimately is what you are,
This awareness that observes even your purpose,
Even your Dharma.
Until at some point it will find its way out through the crown merging with consciousness itself.
