Welcome.
This is a practice of meeting emotion as it is,
Without trying to fix it,
Change it or push it away.
In our culture we're often taught that some feelings are good,
Others are bad,
That we should hide our grief,
Suppress our anger,
Distract from our sadness,
But what if every emotion held intelligence?
What if your feelings weren't here to overwhelm you,
But to simply move through you?
Today we'll explore emotional alchemy,
Not by changing how you feel,
But by being with it fully.
Alchemy,
Breath and presence are the alchemical agents,
And your job is to just show up.
So let's begin.
Find a position that feels supported.
You might be sitting with your spine long,
Or lying down with a cushion beneath your knees.
Take some time to allow your body to settle,
And gently close your eyes if that feels safe.
Take a few soft breaths.
Inhale into the belly,
Exhale slowly out through the mouth.
Again,
Inhale presence,
Exhale effort.
And with each breath,
Let the body soften.
Unclench the jaw,
Let the shoulders drop,
Unhook from trying to feel better,
And instead give yourself permission to feel whatever's here.
And now begin to tune in.
Is there an emotion present right now?
It might be very clear,
Like sadness,
Or anger,
Fear,
Or guilt.
Or it might be more subtle,
Like a heaviness,
Or a restlessness,
Or a vague discomfort.
You don't need to name it perfectly,
Just sense into it,
As you would tune into a faint signal.
If you're not sure,
Ask yourself what emotion is closest to the surface right now.
And whatever arises,
Let it be enough.
Now,
Notice where in your body this emotion lives,
Scanning slowly from the crown of your head,
Down your face,
Throat,
Chest,
Belly,
Hips,
Legs.
Where does it land?
You might feel a tightness in the chest,
A swirl in the belly,
A lump in the throat,
Or a dull heaviness somewhere deeper.
Wherever it lands,
Gently rest your attention in that area.
You're not trying to fix it or change it,
You're simply keeping it company.
And now breathe into that place,
Allowing your breath to be like a warm light or a hand on the shoulder.
Inhale,
Creating space around the sensation,
Exhale,
Softening the edges.
If it helps,
Silently say,
You are welcome here,
I'm listening.
And this is the heart of emotional alchemy.
Not turning lead into gold,
But meeting what is tender,
Raw,
Or buried with loving awareness.
You don't need to understand the story behind the emotion,
The breath knows how to move what the mind cannot.
Inhaling presence and exhaling permission.
And now ask the emotion gently,
If you could speak,
What would you say?
Listen without censoring,
You may hear words or see images,
You may feel nothing at all but a deep quiet.
And that's okay,
Even the silence is sacred.
Now ask a second question,
What do you need from me right now?
Perhaps it's to slow down,
To set a boundary,
To cry,
To scream,
Or simply to rest.
Whatever it is,
Receive the answer without needing to act on it immediately,
Just witness it.
And let's take a few final rounds of breath together.
Inhale through the nose,
Filling the body.
Exhale through the mouth,
Releasing tension.
Again,
Inhale,
I allow.
Exhale,
I let go.
And let this emotion know,
I see you,
I'll keep listening.
You've just created more space in the system,
In your system.
Even if the emotion hasn't gone away,
You've changed your relationship to it.
And that is alchemy.
So as we come toward a close,
Bring your awareness to your whole body.
Feel your feet or the weight of your body supported.
Wiggle the fingers and toes.
Become aware gently of the room around you.
And take a final deep breath in,
Inhaling strength.
Exhaling softness.
And I invite you to carry this practice into the rest of your day.
Knowing you can return any time you feel something asking to be met and not managed.
Thank you.
