Stop rushing.

Take a break.

You are not lazy.

Trust that you'll get it done.

You always do.

To perform optimally,

You need to rest.

You need to recover.

You need to heal.

You need to take a breath.

So do so.

Give yourself permission.

Pour the cup of tea.

Feel its warmth.

Taste its subtlety.

The world will still be there.

Your work will still be waiting for you.

Return to it with fresh eyes.

Embrace it with new energy.

Attack the day.

There is a real temptation to fall into the trap of constant action.

To always be on the go.

Always be working.

Always be attempting some sort of self-improvement.

To not take a break.

At least this is true for a distinct set of personality types.

Those who've grown up with a challenging past.

Who struggled.

Whose role models in their life were less than desirable.

If you had such a past,

And you were working through it,

It's easy to feel like your life is built upon a foundation of quicksand.

That unless you keep taking action,

You will fall back into the habits of your past.

Or the example of your parents.

And you'll end up as a failure.

As the way that you see the negative role models from your past.

But there is a fallacy here.

First of all,

You are different to the people you are trying to avoid emulating.

You have them as an example.

At least as an example of what to avoid.

You have the self-awareness of the concept that you are more than the examples of your past.

You know what you've done and where you've come from.

If you take the long view,

If you detach and you step back,

You'll be able to see where you've come from.

You'll be able to see where you are now.

And you'll be able to see your daily habits.

You'll be able to see what you've accomplished and then compare it to where you started.

As well as compare it to the examples you had from your childhood.

You'll quickly see that while you have a fear of laziness,

A fear of falling into the trap,

Your actions have proven that you're far more than that.

Your actions have proven that you are able to perform.

You are not lazy.

You're just fearful of being lazy.

Now,

There is a risk of continual performance,

Of course.

The risk that you'll over-exert yourself and crash either mentally,

Physically or relationship-wise.

So in order to perform optimally,

In order to outgrow your past,

In order to fulfill the potential you have in your life,

You need to rest,

Recover,

Heal and you need to take a breath.

In terms of physical training,

A lot of the benefits come from the day of rest.

When you take a step back and let your mind and your body and your soul heal and recover itself.

When you eat well,

When you perform the self-care.

But you need to give yourself permission to do so.

You need to give yourself the acknowledgement that despite your past,

You are more than that.

And that you've learnt from your past.

Your actions have proven that you are able to continue going even after setbacks.

Because you've faced setbacks.

You've faced days of temptation or true laziness.

But you are able to get up and keep going.

You are so much more than your past.

So give yourself permission to take a step back,

To detach and to be in the moment.

So pour yourself a cup of tea and feel its warmth and taste its subtlety.

The application to real life is embracing your family and spending time with them.

Relaxing,

Reading that book,

Having the bath and doing the things for yourself.

For the sheer joy of doing it for yourself.

The world will still be waiting for you.

Your work will still be waiting for you.

But taking a breath will allow you to return to that work with fresh eyes.

To embrace it with a new reality,

A new energy.

Which will allow you to attack the day.

And how do you know you'll do this?

You know it because you've always done it in the past.

You know that you'll come back to it because that is just who and what you are.

You are capable based on the evidence of what you've previously done.

Look at what you've accomplished despite your initial starting point in life.

Look at what you've accomplished despite the setbacks,

The hurdles and the issues that you've faced.

Look at what you've accomplished through all the trauma and the issues that occurred in your childhood.

You can and will succeed,

Provided you don't burn yourself out in the process.

So stop rushing.

Take a breath.

You are not lazy.

Trust that you'll get it done.

You always do.

To perform optimally,

You need to rest.

You need to recover.

You need to heal.

You need to take a breath.

So do so.

Give yourself permission.

Pour the cup of tea.

Feel its warmth.

Taste its subtlety.

The world will still be there for you.

Your work will be waiting for you.

Return to it with fresh eyes.

Embrace it with new energy.

Attack the day.

Hi Zachary, thanks for this very helpful “Stop Rushing” lecture! Actually, it’s exactly the trap I am constantly facing - even more since completely working from home due to Corona ... Will utilize this more often to get me out of this trap, which I am aware of, but hardly can get rid of! Enjoy your warm cup of tea, as I will do now ...
